my notes from reading "doors of perception"
by aldous huxley
🔸 "we live together, act on, and react to, one another; but always and in all circumstances we are by ourselves. the martyrs go hand in hand into the arena; they are crucified alone"
🔹 every human group is a society of island universes
🔹 we live in reduced awareness for the better of our own survival. however, we mistake this reduced awareness as an absolute depiction of the universe and others
🔹 color is a utilitarian luxury... most animal species cannot see color or have a limited color scope
🔹 the mastery it takes for a painter to depict the folds in linens and clothes is overlooked
🔹 artists and writers are visionaries blessed with expression
🔹 "familiarity breeds contempt"
but just because you are comfortable and skilled in one environment doesn't make you better than anyone else. once you are out of that comfort zone, how then does your pride serve you?
🔹 we for some reason deem our inscapes as more significant than our outscapes. hence we look for the divine within ourselves and put off the world in exchange for religion
🔹 reality is a burning truth, too much for our egos to bear
🔹 to remain undistracted
... from past humiliations, fears, cravings, imagined success, old mistakes, hatred
🔹 flowers are vibrant but the miracle happens in the foliage
do any of these click with you?
these particular ideas stood out to me while i was reading, but maybe won't make sense out of context to whomever of you actually took the time to read this caption - 5 days ago
