However, there are many other rich sources of this mineral from plant-based foods.

Iron is an important mineral that makes up hemoglobin which is essential for oxygen transport in the blood.

Women have higher needs of iron compared to men due to menstruation and therefore are more at risk for anemia. Low iron levels can also lead to weakness, fatigue, headaches, pale skin and nail beds.

There are two types of iron one can obtain from the diet: non-heme and heme iron.
💪🏼
Non-heme iron is found predominately in plant based foods such as dark leafy greens, beans, and seeds, while heme iron is found solely in animal products.

It is true that heme iron is more readily absorbed by the human digestive tract than its non-heme counterpart.

This is due to the high level of phytates found in plants which bind to several minerals (not just iron), preventing there absorption. In addition, consumption of calcium rich foods inhibits iron absorption in the small intestine.

Sounds like we should be eating a lot of heme iron, right? Not quite. You can get a lot more non-heme iron out of your plants by soaking beans and cooking your greens and beans which greatly cuts down on the inhibitory phytic acid levels in your food.

Additionally, synergistically pairing non-heme iron foods with vitamin C & citrus, such as squeezing fresh lemon on a spinach salad, greatly increases bio-availability of non-heme iron. Further, consuming both heme and non-heme iron in meals can greatly enhance non-heme absorption.

Love this post by @nubskitchen that highlights the difference between a chocolate powder vs. true raw cacao powder. More info below:

“When I was little I thought the left one (also known as “Nesquik”) was the one and only cacao powder. When the opposite is true because it’s basically just sugar with some (about 20% cacao) 🤯 I know this by checking the list of ingredients + nutrition facts🧐.

On a label, the ingredients are listed in order of predominance, the ingredients used in the highest amount first, followed by those in smaller amounts. If you check the left one, sugar is the first word in this list... Want to double check? Just take a look at the nutrition facts, in this case it says 80% carbs of which 75% sugar!

Cacao powder is the ‘healthy’ part in chocolate because it’s high in polyphenols. These are antioxidants that provide small health benefits when it’s part of a healthy, varied and balanced diet. So that’s why dark chocolate is claimed as healthy, because they contain more antioxidants and therefore more potential benefit.

🔥3 workouts for bigger biceps!

1. Heavy straight bar curls (4 sets of 5)- no way around it. If you want to grow you have to lift heavier. These straight bar curls are the best way to grow your arms in my opinion.
2. Alternating kettle bell (or DB) curls (4 sets of 6 each arm)- I like using kettle bells since they tend to keep more tension throughout the movement due to the weights lower center of gravity. Switch up the normal DB curls for KB and you’ll notice a difference.
3. Twenty-ones (3 sets of 21)- these are an old school classic bicep finisher that will drastically increase the amount of time you biceps are “under tension” which is one of the primary factors for muscle growth.
