Highlands Ranch, Colorado. 8 students were injured and 1 was killed when gunmen entered STEM School Highlands Ranch and opened fire. Another tragedy in a long and ever-growing list of school shootings. As media and politicians spoke about gun control, school safety reform, and what could be changed, the students took control of their voices, shutting down an event sponsored by the Brady Campaign, and turning the conversation back to their own pain and resilience, rather than speeches by politicians. Seeing these students seize the narrative and refuse to accept becoming a backdrop to another campaign speech was incredibly inspiring, and seeing their strength in the face of tragedy will stick with me for a long time. #onassignment

Another fun day with Captain Obvious and the @cpbgroup team making a series of gifs for a Hotels.com campaign. S/O to @stephhhlangan for being a killer art director, and the entire CP+B crew for coming together to make some rad work 🎉

Media outside Columbine High School. Denver-area schools today were evacuated after 18-year old Sol Pais, who had made threats against the school, flew to Colorado and bought a gun. A manhunt ended for Pais when her body was found near Echo Lake Lodge near the base of Mt. Evans. #onassignment for @afpphoto

Another program with @unreasonable in the bag, and once again I’m floored with the work these entrepreneurs are doing to change our world for the better. #unreasonablefuture brought together entrepreneurs changing the future of our workplaces, classrooms, healthcare facilities and more using some of the most mind-boggling technology and innovative solutions I’ve ever seen. These are just a few of the people working to change our future for the better. Check out the initiatives at unreasonablegroup.com for more information on them all.

Every morning John McDonald wakes up, he has one goal: keep his schools safe, and prevent tragedies like the one that made his district synonymous with tragedy. As the Director of Safety and Security for Jefferson County Schools, which includes Columbine High School, it’s a highly important and emotionally loaded task. I recently spent some time with John for a @washingtonpost story written by the insanely talented @mjcontrera. Give it a read, it’s worth your time.

Back in eastern Colorado, where once again the struggle between land rights and urban development is in the spotlight. Oil and gas companies are pushing to block increased regulation on their industry, while others, like Erin Martinez, are speaking out against what they say is an unsafe and unaccountable industry. Martinez’s husband and brother were killed in an explosion that flattened their home, and left Erin with serious injuries. Others, like farmer Leslie Fagerburg, offer sympathies but believe their rights as landowners give them license to use the land how they see fit. As the rural & urban divide in Colorado is increasingly shrinking, tragedies like Erin’s are coming into direct conflict with land rights advocates like Fagerburg, leading to heated political showdowns at the Capitol.

Frozen Dead Guy Days, Nederland, CO. A celebration of Bredo Mortsøl, who has been cryogenically frozen in a shed outside of town since 1993. Come for the coffin races, stay for the hearse parades, polar plunges, and parties that transform the small mountain town every year. Thanks to @kdr42 for another fun assignment!

Once again, massive thanks to everyone that came out for the opening reception of Mile 806: Portraits of the Appalachian Trail. It’s been incredible to see this passion project of @pmbphoto and I take shape and develop into a full-fledged gallery show, something neither of us expected when we first photographed the series. It’s been an absolute blast working with curators and exhibit directors to help the idea take shape, and it was a true privilege to show the work in my hometown. The show is on display through the end of February at the Krempp Gallery. Thanks to @jaspercommunityarts for showing the work, to the entire community for the constant support, and most of all to the hikers who let us continue to tell their stories.

Denver is one of the fastest growing cities in the country, and one of many western cities undergoing radical transformation to accommodate an ever-increasing population. As cities grow up rather than out, cranes become a staple of the skyline, to be slowly replaced by the skyscrapers. Longtime natives are concerned the buildings will ruin the character and trademark vistas that are their signature, while proponents argue it’s the only way to meet the cities’ skyrocketing housing costs. Shot #onassignment for the @washingtonpost. Huge thanks to @kdombsadof for the assignment!

Scenes from the 2016 election. Two years later, I still remember how much of a roller coaster the day was. The excitement, the anger, the hope, and the heartbreak. As the watch parties wound down, people took to the streets; some to celebrate and some to protest. It set the stage for two years of some of the most aggressive and divisive politics I’ve ever seen. Tomorrow is a landmark election, that will once again set the tone of our country for years to come. Get out. Go vote. Make your voice heard. Shot #onassignment for the @nytimes
