"I always thought of the Balearic Islands as resort destination with all the crowds and the negative aspects of mass tourism. Arriving here I realised that, like most resort destinations, the crowds are only concentrated in few areas. Discovering the islands and the more remote parts showed me authentic places and preserved beaches. Menorca remains my favourite island, and the white-washed village of Binibequer was definitely fun to visit and a pleasant surprise."

"Fenghuang, one of the most traditional, old villages in China, has been well preserved over the years with much of its original architecture such as the wooden houses on stilts. When I captured it with my friends, I was thinking how relaxing it would be to live here — like life after retirement in beautiful landscape, away from the noise world."

"It was a cold morning in India. We were just outside the city of Jaipur and had climbed a few hundred steps to reach this spot. The sky was filled with a thick haze from dust and pollution, resulting in a coloured sky. All I could hear was the clicks from my camera as we were the only ones enjoying the sunrise on the wall. I quickly learned that mornings in India were the most peaceful time."

The term “tourist” is defined as “a person who is traveling or visiting a place for pleasure.” So, why has the word garnered such a negative connotation? Travel is something we should all enjoy and see as mutually beneficial for those involved: tourism sustains all sorts of industries, while tourists are exposed to new cultures and ways of thinking. With that in mind, head to the link in our bio to read more about why you should still be a tourist.

What are some of your favorite experiences as just a “tourist?” Let us know in the comments below.

"I had the opportunity to take my sister through Andalusia to celebrate her graduating college — our first time traveling together as adults. She's been a wedding photographer for 8 years while I'd just bought my first real camera a year ago, so it was a unique chance to shoot together. We took a day trip to Ronda to see its famous bridge, and we were blown away. There are paths along the whole gorge with houses built on hundred-foot high cliffs all the way down to the unmistakably Spanish valley. Among all the treasures in southern Spain, Ronda surprised us the most. All in all, we definitely challenged each other to grow in different ways, and we have tons of incredible content to remember the trip together by."

“As a kid, one of my biggest dreams was to get to the top of a glacier, so I jumped at the opportunity to hike the Vallanaraju Mountain (18,655ft / 5,686m) with some friends. It was 9 hours of hiking to the summit, starting at midnight. There were no sounds on the mountain except the subtle wind, the slow footsteps crushing snow, and the harnesses moving along the ropes. There were 6 of us, and most of the time nobody was talking. This was for sure one of the most challenging moments of my life but also one of the most rewarding. The feeling of realizing my childhood dream was overwhelming; I cried so much from happiness reaching the top, surrounded by nature.”

"Gyeongbokgung Palace is located in the heart of Seoul and is a breathtaking palace worth visiting. I'm a second-generation Korean-Canadian, meaning I was born in Canada after my parents emigrated from Korea. I've visited many times as a child but don't have too many memories from there. I've been back twice as an adult now, which made me appreciate my background and culture that much more. As I walked through this palace, it was incredible to think how people were able to build it long ago. Learning about the culture's history really helped me to understand and respect my background, and witnessing the changing of the guards (while observing people dressed in traditional Hanboks) made me feel like I was back in that era!"
Back in 2013, we sent @elbow_macaroni (and current team member) to see his birth country for the first time since being adopted from Korea as an infant. Read his story linked in our bio!

"I was out for a walk in my hometown Genoa, Italy, when I took this photo. I like to photograph the facades of buildings illustrating everyday life with the clothes, hanging to dry and exposed for everyone to see. Genoa, like any other city in Italy, has a lot of character; it's heterogenous with many cultures and varied architecture. It is becoming more touristic each year, but the locals are not disturbed, keeping their traditions and Italian spirit alive!"

"I was walking around the Cairo Citadel and discovered a perfect angle from which I was able to capture what the city means to me: brown buildings, dust everywhere, and dry air — a huge contrast from what I’m used to growing up in Tapei with no desert in sight. Whilst I didn’t enjoy breathing the dry air, I will never forget the heart-warming happy faces of the locals who were so welcoming and excited to take photos with my wife and me."
