WHAT DO WE DO WHEN WE LAND??? Nearly every time we arrive somewhere we will have to "turn around" the aircraft. This means we need to get the aircraft ready for another flight. This often is a very busy period and a well choreographed process where we need to do a lot of things with very limited time. Generally we aim to turn the aircraft around in 50 min. This means from the moment we set the brakes till the moment we release them we have 50 minutes till our next EOBT (Estimated Off Blocks Time). In these 50 minutes we need to do a lot of activities and a lot of key people are involved. It's amazing to see that no matter where we land this "team" gets into action and we all know our individual roles and what is expected.
While the passengers are disembarking we as pilots finish off the post flight checks and admin duties. One of us then goes outside to do the external inspection of the aircraft, set up the fuel panel for the next fuel to be loaded. The cleaners get on as soon as the last passengers gets off the aircraft. They truly are an under appreciated workforce. Every time they get onboard they face a strict time constraint and deadline in which they clean the whole aircraft, hoover and clean the restrooms.
As soon as the last cleaner gets off the cabin crew perform a detailed security check. Now it's time for boarding to start again.
During all of this we prepare the aircraft for its next flight, set up the route, load the performance figures needed to take off and brief the departure and think ahead of any possible threats or airport specifics that might face us.
Ideally the last passenger boards and the doors close at T -5min. This gives us 5 minutes to arrange our departure with ATC and still make our scheduled departure time.
You can safely assume when you next board an aircraft, that this aircraft already flew that day ......
