[invite] “It’s super, super good” — direct quote from the boyfriend 🙈 He’s right though. Very tasty fudge from Jack’s Bakery (pictured here: Oreo, Jammie Dodger and Biscoff). I’m not usually a fudge person but this might’ve turned me over a new leaf! You can catch Jack’s Bakery at Brick Lane market or Walthamstow Sunday Social. Happy bank holiday weekend everyone! 💕

[invite] Is it me or is Emilia’s just getting better and better? I’m making my way through the menu and on top of their carbonara, my new favourites also include the ravioli with lamb and the pesto. Perfectly cooked pasta, rich sauces, tons of flavour and decent value! .
.
P.S. The summer special (spinach and ricotta ravioli) is available until Aug 31st so head down ASAP if you want to catch that 😋

[invite] There were a lot of brilliant traders at Walthamstow Sunday Social (a North London food market with a wide array of traders and artisanal products), but my favourite had to be Eat Lah. They’re a Malaysian street food concept, serving nasi kerabu (a blue-coloured rice dish with mixed salad, fish crackers, homemade sambal and your choice of chicken or tofu) 🇲🇾 Their coconut chicken was the stand out for me — it was succulent and flavourful, cooked to perfection 👌 I did wish there was some dried fish in their version of nasi kerabu too because I love how that salty flavour compliments the sweet/spicy sambal, but I’m just being picky here. Overall I’m super happy to see more Malaysian street food and can’t wait to see these guys explode on the food scene 💥 They’re currently part of Kerb’s Inkerbator so I’m sure they’re only going to get better and better.
.
.
More generally, I loved the vibe at Walthamstow Sunday Social. Super friendly traders, a relaxed atmosphere (not too crowded like other more central London markets, plus there was live music) and a fair amount of seating too.

[invite] Spectacular 18-course omakase (literally “I will leave it to you”) menu by @kurisuomakase. Be prepared for a culinary journey here. The first couple of courses bring you steadily through classic and familiar Japanese dishes — there’s miso soup and tempura, both of which stick very much to how they are traditionally prepared. By the time we get to the sea bream course however, the meal reaches a whole other level 💥🤯
.
.
The sea bream was seared perfectly and had a lovely bit of fattiness. The king prawn had a nice peppery kick. The scallop with yuzu LITERALLY melted in your mouth. Each course becomes a little richer, with the final dish being otoro with caviar and truffle (1st picture). At no point do the secondary ingredients overpower the fish though: they are simply there to enhance and compliment the flavour of the star ingredient 🍣 As we move away from the very traditionally prepared early courses, Kurisu begins to incorporate some of the flavours from his Colombian heritage and becomes more inventive/experimental. For example, there’s a salsa that works really nicely with seared salmon.
.
.
Not only was I blown away by the food, I really enjoyed the atmosphere too. It’s an intimate, no frills setting with only 8 people and the chef tells the stories behind each dish throughout the meal. The menu changes so you might not have the exact dishes mentioned/pictured here, but I can assure you that the quality and value for money is great so I highly recommend booking 😊 Follow @kurisuomakase on Instagram to see when they have availability! (Note: the normal menu at Ichiban Sushi is different from @kurisuomakase’s menu; you need to book specifically for this)

[invite] 🌮 Taco Tuesday... 🌮 but this time a little different! The shell is made from a crispy fried tortilla instead. The taco is filled with grilled chicken thigh and their own slaw, then drizzled with garlic and cheese mayo and their hot chino sauce (you can select up to 2 sauces). I’m a sucker for garlic mayo so I was pretty happy with this combo! The chicken was also nicely tender. Prachino mentioned that they used to sous vide their chicken but this was creating a lot of plastic waste, so they switched up their cooking technique. They’re also moving away from plastic cutlery. I love food markets but hate how much waste can be generated, so major props to them for trying to be more sustainable 👏

[invite] Smoked brisket naan from Flank — the combination of their fiery chili hot sauce and garlic mayo was to die for 🤤 So so good! There is quite a lot going on in this wrap but it all worked well together. Massive portion too!
.
.
Flank is one of the permanent traders at @oldspitalfieldsmarket, which I’m a big fan of as there is such a wide range of options there. Top tip: order food from the market then grab a spot at Elder Gardens (weather permitting) — it’s a lot less busy there than the main market, especially during the weekends. Great spot to chill out 😋

Weekends are made for pancakes and lie-ins 🙏 These were the perfect American style pancakes — warm and fluffy on the inside, a little bit of crisp on the outside, and doused in maple syrup 😋
.
.
We had a dreamy stay at @no38thepark the other weekend. Love the interiors and the cosy vibe there. They leave the doors open to rooms that aren’t booked, so it feels like you’re just staying at someone’s house. Such a nice touch. I would definitely recommend it for a quiet weekend away from London!

[invite] Friday drinks plans? Definitely head down to Lazy Ballerinas, a beautiful wine bar in Fleet Street. So glad I discovered this place — the interiors are gorgeous and the staff are lovely. Perfect spot for an after work drink! They also have small plates for you to nibble on so you don’t accidentally drink 3 glasses of wine without having dinner 🙈 .
.
Although you might not come here for the food, it was generally good quality and decent portion size for the cost (3 small plates for £20). If you’re hungry I would definitely recommend getting the steak, whereas the smoked tuna was a little smaller in size. The potted crab was delicious too and comes with some toast, a great moreish snack! I don’t think you can book tables here but it wasn’t too busy when I visited on a Wednesday night. There’s also an outdoors area so fingers crossed summer comes back for the rest of August 🤞 .

Another day, another katsu 🍛 This time it’s from Sushinoen: a well-priced Japanese restaurant in Aldgate with a massive menu that is generally approved by everyone in the office. You can satisfy any Japanese craving here from udon to sushi (there is randomly some siu mai on the menu, but let’s just ignore that 👀) I mentioned last week that I wished A Thousand Knives’ katsu curry came with more carrots and potatoes: that’s definitely not a problem here. Portions are biiig 🙈 Overall, this place is pretty authentic and definitely good value. The casual, no frills vibe makes it the perfect quick and easy weekday lunch destination.

[invite] Truffle pasta, a bottle of rosé and al fresco dining — who needs the Italian coast when you’ve got La Tagliata in Fitzrovia 🙈 This carbonara was rich and delicious — lots of bits of salty, smoked guanciale complimented by a light truffle flavour.

If you want to catch their special truffle menu, head down ASAP 🙌 The restaurant is a little more upscale than popular places like Emilia’s, Padella and Flour and Grape, so expect prices to be a bit higher too. Portion sizes are good though!

🎶 I’m so eggcited, I just can’t hide it 🎶 ... because I’ve found the *perfect* scrambled eggs at @trade_coffee 🙌 The texture of the sourdough is also on point and to top it all off: a fat bit of chorizo 👌 Love the added bit of crunch on top too. I ventured from my usual Trade order (their grilled cheese) and didn’t regret it. This place can do no wrong — incredibly tasty food, big portions and very affordable! 🙌

Rain or sun, chicken katsu is always my go-to lunch option 😋 This one from A Thousand Knives is pretty good — chicken is crisp on the outside and not dry on the inside. Rice is cooked nicely and sauce is authentic (I’ve tried so many different options from Deliveroo and Uber Eats that don’t resemble katsu curry at all). Wish there were more potatoes and carrots though. I also think it’s a bit pricey — I can go to Mu Mu Kitchen and get an even better chicken katsu for just £6.50. That’s Spitalfields Market for you though! Overall, A Thousand Knives is a pretty good option if you’re in the area and I’d order it again.

This steak was good, man! Ok might have hit a caption low with that one 😂 From my experience, Goodman is a reliable place for good quality steak. Their sides are similarly priced to Hawksmoor but the portions are definitely bigger. I’m a fan of their super creamy mac n cheese, rich creamed spinach and crisp truffle fries 🙌 What’s your go to steak and sides combo? 🥩 .

[invite] ✨ New Opening Alert ✨ After aaaaall the hype at Taste this summer, Eggslut‘s first UK branch is officially open today in Portobello! And there’s more to it than eggs in a brioche bun (although their version of this is obvs very good) — there are cheeseburgers and a steak bun too. It’s all simple, delicious, comfort food — may not be groundbreaking but they do it all well.
.
.
I was already a fan of their Fairfax (scrambled eggs and chives, cheddar cheese, caramelized onions and sriracha mayo), but didn’t expect to enjoy the Gaucho so much (seared wagyu tri-tip steak, over medium egg, chimichurri, red onions and dressed arugula). Their steak was actually really tender and flavourful. Guess you just gotta visit Eggslut to figure out what your favourite dish is! .
.
It does feel a little pricey, especially the Fairfax — £9 for scrambled eggs in a brioche bun (I think £7 would be more reasonable)? *But* 26 Grains in Covent Garden also has a similar dish for £9, so I guess that’s just London for ya! Prices are also unsurprising given that Eggslut is in a touristy area. They wouldn’t charge these prices if there wasn’t a market for it, right? 🤔
.
.
Big thanks to @truffleandtoast for the #invite and to the @eggslutuk team for dealing with how busy it was during the preview 😊

[invite] Taco Tuesday 🙌 A medley of tacos from EDU, a Spanish street food concept in Boxpark. The chick frito (fried chicken thigh with smoked garlic aioli) was my favourite, whilst I thought the elveggie was a bit of a miss (too much going on, the halloumi itself was masked). The actual corn tortilla was nice though, not too thick at all 🌮 Lots of deep fried sides going on here, which are great accompaniments to drinks at Boxpark. I think EDU’s overall concept could still be worked on though, as the Spanish influences didn’t stand out as much to me.
