FOOD FIGHT: STAYING BODY POSITIVE FOR THE SUMMER⁠

Well, I feel like a sausage this summer. It was bound to happen. It does every year. I feel fit and comfortable in my body and then… my husband gets the summer off and cooks a boat load of food for EVERY meal. AND it tastes amazing and I just want to sit down and EAT IT ALL. So, I do.⁠
⁠
My husband is in every sense of the word a “foodie.” He found he loved to cook a few years back and most days are a culinary adventure in this house. This is not a bad problem to have, especially since I hate cooking, and yet, love to eat. But, during the school year it’s just in the evenings when he prepares dinner, and during the summer months, it’s all of the time.⁠
⁠
And the thing is, I don’t look like a sausage. I haven’t even gained weight due to the huge amounts of yoga I do every day. But, I feel heavier and full at times when I normally feel light and lovely, and for someone that has suffered from eating disorders in the past, it can be unsettling to feel that way.⁠
⁠
So, what to do? Beat my body up and do even more yoga? Or take up running miles and miles on top of the heavy yoga schedule? Or not eat the beautiful food? Or tell my body how fat it is and how much I hate it over and over again my mind? NOOOO! None of that. Been there, done that, wrote the book about it.⁠

De omgekeerde krijger noemen we in onze studio ook wel de zonnekrijger. Dan moet dit toch wel de perfecte week zijn om de houding in het zonnetje te zetten! ☀☀☀

De omgekeerde krijger is een krachtige houding waarmee je je hele lichaam opent, strekt en tegelijkertijd sterker maakt. Je kan de houding bovendien heel fijn combineren met de verlengde krijger. .

Supta-Padangusthasana-2.  Recently I have started ending my sadhana with this Supine, leg and hip extension, followed by a shav-asana. This reclining hand-to-big-toe has become my go-to pose to release lower back tightness. Works almost like magic when held for a few breaths on either side. Not seen in the pic, I have elevated my lower back by placing it on a block and placed a blanket over it to make it more comfortable. I’m not very good at receiving criticism. If it’s constructive and comes from a place of genuine concern, I try to reserve my immediate response so that I can take in the actual message. A few deeps breaths while consciously unclenching my jaw and relaxing my facial muscles can work miracles.
.
The honest truth is that a lot of times I get defensive and my immediate response would be highly emotionally charged. Criticism often feels personal, and to me it almost feels like being targeted for blame. Instinctively I feel like re-directing that blame to another direction. The alternative route of silence and conscious breathing buys me some time to be a little less reactionary.
.
Although the intention is for this approach, it isn’t always successful. To pause before reacting requires a lot of restrain. It also requires an acute objective awareness of the events that is occurring, which is a very hard thing to master.
.
When the criticism only affects the surface area, it’s easier to apply this restrain. The emotional charged response isn’t always too strong, and so asserting awareness over the situation seems manageable.
.
But when the criticism cuts deep into a rooted insecurity or pain, the emotional reflex can be overwhelming. Holding the reigns back becomes difficult - sometimes it feels impossible.
.
We are all human. Through evolution, our minds have been programmed to remember pain so that we don’t put ourselves through those situations again. But we’ve also evolved to be very complex creatures. And sometimes we unintentionally overgeneralise situations, assuming they would cause the same pain we once experienced.
.
The thing is, we’re also not meant to be perfect. Although I don’t profess to know the meaning of life, but I highly doubt it’s to attain an ideal of perfection. So maybe one day we reacted in a way that isn’t very nice. Well, it happens. We’re not perfect. Notice it, acknowledge it, apologise, forgive yourself and move on.

Ci sfugge uno sguardo con una persona che potrebbe cambiarci la vita, ci sfugge un’occasione, un’idea, un segnale che ci indica che siamo sulla strada giusta.
Ogni giorno viviamo in attesa del momento giusto per rilassarci, dedicarci a noi stessi, fare quel viaggio, dire quella frase, prendere quella decisione...ma in questo modo rimaniamo vittime dell’attesa, e ci perdiamo la vita vera, il nostro presente 🙌🏻

Muchas partes de nosotros están dolidas, sobreviviendo, incluso creemos que talvez están mal. Físicas, mentales, emocionales, espirituales.

Muchas partes de nosotros, heridas o no escuchadas, quieren sentir aceptación, y crean sombras, olvidando que son emociones que la mayoría tenemos miedo de hablar.
.

Cuando vemos ese dolor en otros y podemos expresarnos con seguridad y reconocer que “yo también siento”, “a mi también me duele”, “yo también pasé por esa situación”, “yo también he estado ahí”, nos abrimos en un espacio humano que se sostiene con el velo de la empatía, para romper esas paredes de pena, vergüenza y crítica.
.

Rompemos por nosotros mismos y nos abrimos hacia los demás.
.

Con la mirada atenta, los brazos abiertos, y desde la vibración del corazón más vulnerable, podemos vernos y aceptarnos, amarnos capa a capa y darnos el regalo de la libertad, de la expresión de la honestidad y de la energia expansiva del amor y la compasión.
.

Sino son estos los regalos que vine a recibir en este vida, no comprendería entonces la bendición de respirar cada día, y ver cómo todas las expresiones de Dios a mi alrededor, me hablan y recuerdan las lecciones, cada uno de mis días.

Life has been a little like Vrikshasana or tree pose lately - trying to grow my roots, find my balance, and reach for my aspirations💫⠀

Last week, I really got to work on things that make my heart so happy. And, you guys... there is so much good stuff coming soon with all things yoga and blogging! I was literally geeking out over all the things 😊 I’ve started creating, planning, and really getting back into my groove after a crazy long hiatus 🙌🏼💯 ⠀
⠀
A fews things I realized last week when it comes to the work I do outside of my full-time job is: ⠀
⠀
✨ I need to manage my time more wisely when it comes to creating and working on the things I love⠀ ⠀

✨ I need to set boundaries for when I do my work aka laptop away at least an hour before bed so my mind isn’t running like crazy and planning all the things while I’m trying to sleep⠀
⠀
✨ I need be more strategic with balancing my blog work and yoga content⠀
.
✨ I’m not going to let my insecurities take over and allow writers block to creep in - I’m just going to write from the heart and keep perfecting my craft no matter what ⠀

These realizations were so important for me to begin to set myself up for success 💖⠀
⠀
In other news: our apartment is slowly but surely coming together 🏡 I’m excited to show some before and after shots soon and all my favorite pieces and things we put in our new home ✨⠀
