Just taking a minute here to say “hey from humid NC” and remind folks who the human face is behind this account and some of the intentions of the poppysol business. Classic Virgo Hannah here in the first photo - in the outdoors and a notebook tucked under-arm for capturing all that’s said and seen. So far, summer has been about catching plants at the right harvest time and drying them in the new dryer for optima quality, tincture making, observing other local permaculture style farms and orchards for new work and land design with Pluck Farm, triage watering and weeding, and sharing the land with visitors. I am humbled all the time by the number of people working with plants - edible and herbal - in a small radius in this community. We each have our own approaches and when possible, we share, and that is beautiful beautiful. Twice beautiful because it should not be overlooked. I want to state again that I am on the path of always learning (see that neon notebook?!) but I am always happy to share what I know with that caveat. Please don’t hesitate to ask if there are herbal questions on your mind.
+
I was gifted a datura plant late spring and last night she had her third bloom. I waited over an hour, hoping to catch the unfurling in action. After sitting with the plant last time though, the message of - I am private, I won’t be rushed, I am owed respect - came through very strongly. The message I am hearing is that sometimes our greatest glory doesn’t need to be witnessed to exist. And, the magic and beauty need not be treated as a performance and most certainly won’t be rushed.
+
This has felt like a time for gathering information, not for doing. For revising, revisioning, watching. It is awakening a new kind of creativity in me and hopefully in others because our world really needs this now. Inaction does not mean there isn’t a lot simmering just under the surface. On the horizon for poppysol - a Herbs + Permaculture class on the farm, a birthday getaway to inspiring Santa Fe, and potentially a mini-book on herbal beverage recipes, the poppysol setup and growing your own herbs! What is incubating for you this season?

Hey. Hi! I’m back from a quick adventure with the family and feeling inspired and recharged. It’s been a while since I’ve answered garden questions in my stories, so comment below and let me know how your garden is doing and if you have any questions as we coast through to the end of July! 🌿

TOP FIVE WAYS to piss off your farmer at your local farmers market:

1. Squeeze the produce. Don't, I repeat DO NOT, squeeze the tomatoes. It will produce a visceral reaction from your farmer. If you want your farmer to hate you for forever please don't squeeze them so hard that they burst (yes, this has actually happened 😬). _

2. Try to break a $100 bill in the first hour of the market. Especially don't do this in the first ten minutes AND please don't do it if you are spending $10 or less. Asking to do this while only spending 3 bucks will incure a special place in farmers market customer hell for you.
_

3. Ask who the farmer is that grows all these vegetables and raises these animals and then act incredulous when you tell them that you're the farmer. Dude, we're in the 21st century now, women are allowed to take credit for what they do. I love cooking and all, but Stewart will tell you that we've yet to find any man that can out dig or out broadfork me. Yes, women are farmers too.
_

4. Asking where the vegetables are when there's a full table of veggies right in front of you. Yes, we all love our sweet corn and watermelon but there's so much more out there! Be adventurous, try some colorful Swiss chard or a bunch of radishes. I know that the whole grocery store shopping mentality has completely fucked with your idea of seasonal eating, but just give it a try! And please don't be hating on all my greens. Remember, kale is a vegetable too.
_

5. Respect your farmer. Don't complain about the prices. Trust us, we are not in this for the money. Our profit margin is tiny. Cheap tomatoes don't taste good, and good tomatoes ain't gonna be the same price as those godawful grocery store ones! I don't see you turning up your nose at your 5 buck latte, so please don't give me grief about a stack of greens that will feed your whole family. / / /
Fellow farmers, what else pisses you off at the farmers market? Now that the summer is in full swing I can think of 8 or 50 other things, but I want to hear from you! .

Day 3 of early morning workouts before my coffee (several hours ago 🤣)!! Working on myself one day at a time. .

Trying to be fierce like my mama bear shirt, and that includes FIERCELY loving my imperfectly perfect body. Society tells me i should pick myself apart, and wish for a "better" body. It's hard to work against something that's ingrained in us from childhood. But i TRY to remember that this body has birthed children, carried me through nearly 4 decades, pushes wheelbarrow after wheelbarrow, digs post holes, hauls animal feed, does weeding squats for hours, runs a high volume acupuncture clinic, swims in rivers, hikes up hills and mountains, and still keeps going without ever demanding that I love it. But I do. Exercising is an act of love, eating food that heals my body is an act of love, eating food that brings me joy 🍕🍔🍨 is an act of love, taking rests, listening to my body, and treating myself kindly are acts of love. Picking apart our perceived "flaws" is not an act of love. .

And so....I am committing to 100 workouts starting July 29th to gain strength, to relieve stress, to feel my best, and yes, to fit into my favorite clothes better. I'm sure my body will change because that is what they do, but we don't have to seek change just because we dont like where we are. We can love and accept ourselves the whole way. Like i said, one day at a time. .

New challenge starts July 29th! I'd love to have you join me and we can do it together 👭👭👭.

You can see that we're reclaiming the hills for trees. We've planted hundreds of things on the farm including a whole lot of trees. Doing our part to capture carbon.

It’s not picturesque, or tidy, or weed-free. It’s deer-nibbled, and overwhelming. But I just love it. Wish I could spend every day, all day down here. But life...

My big girl is ready to Rule The School!! Kindergarten can’t start fast enough for her and I was so excited to find this complete outfit from @littlerabbitwears. The sizing was perfect and the quality is top notch as always! I found Little Rabbit Wears when Holly was a newborn and I have been hooked on their affordable prices and adorable pieces ever since. Love love this shop so much!! This entire outfit (including the bow) for $30! Seriously, their website is worth a visit. 👏
