"One-size-fits all" in women's medicine is a big reason so many of us feel frustrated, sick, and hopeless.
Because the story goes...
You have PMS? Take birth control.
You have painful periods? Take birth control.
You have hormonal headaches? Take birth control.
You have acne? Take birth control.
And then the side effects creep in... depression, loss of libido, yeast infections, gut symptoms, fatigue, and more.
Then we're either passed a new medication or outright dismissed for having symptoms or maybe switched to a different type of contraception.
Now, I'm not anti-birth control. I took the pill for 10 years and man was I glad to have those painful, 7+ day periods put into check. But no one ever asked why? My doctor never asked why I had these symptoms and what they could be a sign of.
And for some women, that means a delay in diagnosis. A delay in knowing what the heck is actually going on. And this is all too common a story for PCOS and endometriosis.
Have hope. There are incredible doctors who ARE asking why, who are giving women the full story about birth control side effects, and who are ready to support you no matter if you want use birth control or stop. Because we all deserve the right to choose for ourselves and be supported in that decision.
