I went digging for a wedding announcement for my great parents, and found this. It’s the first piece of insight into Mildred that is...a little wild? If I’m looking at this right, she and her soldier boyfriend up and eloped in 1918. I thought maybe he had been overseas and they married when he returned, but it looks like he was on leave from Oklahoma, having enlisted the previous year. I don’t have more details but, being about the same age as she was when I married my soldier who had been away a year, I totally get why they wouldn’t want to put off another second.
William was discharged the next year. They made their home in Sacramento, and Mildred went right to being a housewife and mother, raising her children in the Catholic Church, while William went to work as a box man to support the family. They were together until her passing in 1960.
