I’d been wanting to get this record back in my collection for a while but kept putting it off. I had actually gotten this album the first time when I was like 7 or 8 years old. I remember hearing Rush’s Exit…Stage Left around this time. Specifically, I had heard Neil Peart’s drum solo in YYZ. I’m pretty positive that was the point in my life when I knew I wanted to play drums. But anyway, it was my birthday and my dad took me to the local chain record shop (The Wherehouse) to buy me an album. And I opted for Rush’s Moving Pictures. I think I had already gotten Exit…Stage Left on cassette so this would have been the next album to get. Side story - during that same trip to the shop, while we were in line to pay, I remember seeing an AC/DC vinyl box set on display behind the counter and I told my dad that I actually wanted that. But it was really pricey and my dad said no. Behind us in line, there was some rocker couple that saw me asking my dad for the AC/DC box and they were surprised/impressed that some 7/8 year old kid wanted AC/DC records.
Anyway, I had Moving Pictures in my record collection for years up until I sold the majority of my records when I started moving over to CDs when I was in junior high. I picked up the first CD remaster when it came out in 1997. It remains one of my favorite Rush albums. Thankfully, these days, I’ve steered clear enough from classic rock radio that I don’t hear the “overplayed” songs (Tom Sawyer, Limelight, Red Barchetta, etc) so often that I hate them. I can still enjoy the album as a whole.
