Buying second hand or vintage items is a fun treasure hunt, it's good for the planet and (sometimes) the wallet. But buying previously owned items is more than that. For me it is bringing in my home and/or my wardrobe an item with a story, something that has 'lived' before. Each is unique in many ways. Unique in the tear and wear, unique in the patine and in the story. Even if I talk to the vendors as often as I can, I don't get all the stories. When possible I try to figure part of them out, I really like this detective work. For some pieces, it's rather easy, for others, almost impossible. The game is thrilling though. Tomorrow, I'll wake up with the sun to go on another adventure. I'm looking for a very vintage winter coat and if I find one, who knows what story it will tell me. Maybe some fine lady wore it to a night at the theatre, it might be handsewn or bought in a now forgotten shop.
For the item on the picture, I bought the cushion in the back from a lady whose mother or grandmother made it. It was in the family vacation home for decades. It must have witnessed many happy summer nights of laughter and family time. The bag I don't know much about. I got it from a woman who had already bought it second hand, I am trying to date it accurately. The silk scarf was gifted to me by my Mum, she used to wear it with a navy blazer when she was around my age. Funnily enough, I often wear it paired with high waisted jeans and... a navy blazer or cardigan. The brooch was my great aunt's. She had very good taste in jewellery and always look very well put together and pretty. This piece is quite a statement. I remember she used to wear it with summery outfits when I was a kid. She was very proud to say that she bought it (and most of her jewellery) for herself and taught me very young that you shouldn't wait for a man to live your life and certainly not to get anything. Buy yourself beautiful jewellery if you feel like it she kept telling me. She was from a time and place when/where buying a gold brooch or diamond earrings was scandalous. Sound advice though !
