Brief History; US Army Battle Dress ( 2/4)
The Korean War
The U.S. Army entered the Korean War in June 1950,with the same uniforms and equipment from WW2. These uniforms are not reliable to facing cold weather conditions in the mountains of Korea in the winter of 1950-1951,and caused suffering and loss of effectiveness of U.S. troops. The U.S. Army begin to developed new uniforms to adapt this condition and led to changes in uniform and gear.
This new uniforms separated into two categories. The first category was Garrison and Duty uniform, included all uniforms for dress, general duty, formations and ceremonial use. The second category was Field and Work, use for fatigues, combat and utility (see table). For field combat, troops wear a Herringbone twill (HBT) fatigue cotton shirt ( in a dark olive drab shade) with large pockets to store vital items. In the summer months, the M-1943 jacket wore over the HBT fatigues. In the cold winter months, the jacket was worn over a woolen shirt, a sweater and a liner.
In 1950, M-1943 Field Jacket had been replaced by a modified version, the M-1950, nearly identical to the M-1943 but with the addition of inside buttons for the liner. Used less than a year, the M-1950 was quickly replaced by the improved M-1951 Field Jacket.
The M-1951 was made of 9-ounce wind resistant water repellent treated cotton sateen cloth in olive green shade 107 (OG 107), which modified the front closure buttons with a zipper (except the neck button) and the pocket closure buttons with metal snaps. A separate button-in liner and button-on hood were supplied. The M-1951 closes at the neck fully, matching the outer jacket, while the M-1950 had an open V at the neck.
At Korean war, some units directed soldiers to sew white name tapes and/or “US Army” onto their uniforms, though it was never universal. In 1953, the Secretary of the Army made the wearing of “US Army” tape official on uniforms.
