Review of Maker of Universes, by Philip Jose Farmer
Maker of Universes is the first book in Farmer's World of Tiers series. It follows a man named Wolff, after he hears a horn from another world coming from a closet in a house he was considering buying. The doors to the other Universe are opened, and he suddenly finds himself in a fantastical land, where no one grows old, and where every animal has the intelligence of a man. But there is something sinister underneath it all. A powerful Lord rules over this Universe, and he is no benevolent dictator.
This is the most creative book I have ever read. So many of the creatures and humans and settings are so beautifully crafted that you feel like you are there in the story. However, some things were very unclear, or underdeveloped. There was little character development for the main character, and I saw no use for his old age in the beginning, which was simply reversed once he entered the world. It was a fun tale, but not one with very much depth.
