Do you have any tips or go-to habits for starting a new sketchbook?
Some artists find new sketchbooks with nothing but blank pages to be a bit intimidating and even paralyzing. How do you get started? Here are some tips and idea starters we've heard... let us know if you have any!
► Put a few washes, squares or circles of watercolor down on a page as a background starter. You can doodle over the top of it or make it into something else, but just the act of getting something down on a page helps trigger inspiration.
► Consistently dedicate your first page as a cover page with a similar design each time. Maybe it's a calendar that shows what day you started your sketchbook. Maybe it's your favorite cartoon character with a different message in each book. Maybe it's a flower pattern or a zentangle design.
► Start by drawing something familiar - something you already know well, have drawn many times, or feel comfortable with.
► Draw a page of patterns to loosen up.
► Draw what you see around you. Drawing from life is one of the best ways to sharpen your skills, and you'll always have subject matter at your fingertips.
► Test your supplies out on a page. Make little designs and shapes. Fill them in with your different mediums to see what you like and generate ideas.
► Fill a page with mini-drawings of your favorite subject. Fruits, puppies, sports gear, facial features... whatever floats your boat and gets you excited.
