Te Araroa, Day 60
Friday 7th December
Camp #10 > Taumarunui, KM 989.5 > 1031.5
Distance Walked Today: 21km (+ Hitch)
We made a concerted effort to leave early today and we were on trail not long after the other hikers from our campsite. We had heard there was a good lunch special at the Indian restaurant in town, so we powered through the trail today.
The trail was essentially just down hill the whole way. First just continuing along the mountain bike track, crossing bridges and going around stiles. We didn’t stop for the first 9km or so, stopping for a rest at a small shelter just before the “spiral” in the path, where the path goes through a tunnel under a bridge we’d just walked over.
1.6km further and we passed the 1,000km mark, roughly one third of the trail complete! Shortly after this the trail briefly entered a gravel road, before exiting again onto farm and bush track. Six km after the 1K mark we crossed a bridge and came to the car park where mountain bikers would leave their cars whilst off for a days ride.
From here on out, the trail was along road. We were keen to be in town and didn’t want to walk road all day so we walked 2km to a bridge, then another 3km or so along a parallel road until eventually we were picked up by an Australian woman in a Motorhome.
Continuing our theme of unsafe hitched, we sat unbuckled on the couch for the 20 minute ride into town, arriving by about 1:30. Even though we’d been day dreaming of Indian, there was a very tempting looking pizza place just across from where we were dropped off, so a personal pizza was had by all.
We had a room in a nice sort of hotel, but it was spoilt by the terrible wifi :( - 58 minutes ago
