Chicago Bridge & Iron Company; Hortonsphere high pressure storage tank; riveted steel; 1923-41. Photo: Jeff Buster. The Hortonsphere was an innovation for storing liquefied gasses by a company long experienced in tank storage for oil and natural gas. Still made, examples constructed after 1941 or so are of welded construction. This particular sphere in Poughkeepsie, New York, with its interesting plate patten, was the subject of an unfortunately failed historic preservation effort. #hortonsphere#poughkeepsie#industrialarchitecture#sphere#rivets#ironwork#liquefied#lng#chicagobridgeandiron - 27 minutes ago
