To those who are new to the left, or those who have done little reading and do not understand the vernacular of Communists, the phrase ‘Dictatorship of the Proletariat’ may sound awful. Dictatorships throughout history have, of course, been bad for the people and workers of nations. One needs only to look at Nazi Germany, Chile under Pinochet, Spain under Franco, Italy under Mussolini, Cuba under Batista, and the Congo under Leopold II to see that when people hold absolute power in an area, it will only lead to death and destruction to those living under their rule. With this analysis, one can see how someone would misconstrue Dictatorship of the Proletariat with an actual dictatorship.
The Dictatorship of the Proletariat is unlike every dictatorship seen in the world, for it is truly not a real dictatorship. The word dictator implies that only one person has absolute control over a nation, such as Adolf Hitler did. In Dictatorship of the Proletariat, no one person holds power, for it is all of the proletariat who holds power. In current society the vast majority of people in the world lives under the dictatorship of the bourgeoisie, where our lives are ruled over by bosses and corporations, lowering the wages of the worker and raising their prices to increase their overall profits. This dictatorship we live in has been around since the inception of capitalism, and has been apart of our society for so long that many believe that it is normal, that it is the only way to live. Dictatorship of the Proletariat proves otherwise. In the Dictatorship of the Proletariat, the proletariat control their own lives. What gets produced in society, what people can do in their freetime, who will run the government, all of this decided by the people. - 56 minutes ago
