A few of my travel essentials, mostly about controlling the light and sleep environment. Blue Blockers, Eye Mask, and earplugs are a must. Electrical tape to cover up any stray LEDs from electronics (that I cannot just unplug completely). GembaRed Rave as a nightlight. Did you know that sleeping with your feet poking out the covers can help you with your sleep? When we fall asleep our body temperature starts to drop and our bodies are at their coldest when we are in deep sleep. Many scientists attribute cool temperatures to sleepiness which is why exposing your feet can help push your body through the sleeping process. An additional tip is to open your bedroom window slightly to let in a nice cool breeze.

I’m so ready for my bed tonight after a day of medical appointments in London with my husband. Sleep like a baby! For most of us we are not getting enough quality sleep and this is probably one of the easiest parts of one’s life to optimize. Here is a sleep hack that works for me and many of our members. Instead of setting an alarm to wake up, set an alarm on your phone to disconnect from all electronics and go to bed. If you want to get up well rested at say 5am, maybe set an alarm on your phone for 9pm. At 9, turn off all electronics and go to bed! Do this for a few days and you will notice you are waking up at the time you need to wake up naturally and without the alarm. #sleep #sleephack

For starters, these are not the only sleep promoting supplements I recommend nor are they necessarily my favorite (though some of them are. However, I am currently working on some things and can't give away all the good stuff just yet). What this is is a very simplistic stack but can be very potent when dosed correctly. Furthermore, all of the ingredients here can be used fairly consistently without any negative side effects over the long haul (though I don't recommend building dependency to any compounds).

Magnesium (this can come from either L-threonate, or bisglycinate) - 2g (140-150mg of active) if threonate. If glycinate, get 400-500mg of elemental. Glycinate is the cheaper option but still effective - magnesium is a cofactor in melatonin production that not only helps synthesize it but helps regulate the right levels of it.

B6 (p5p) - 10-50mg (can go as high as 100mg)- p5p is basically the active version of B6. It helps optimize cortisol (aiding in its synthesis and breakdown), making it easier to wake up from sleep. It is also helpful for getting to sleep, as it aids tryptophan in its conversion to serotonin (thus, more serotonin available for melatonin synthesis).

Tryptophan - 1-2g - The essential amino acid responsible for synthesizing serotonin. Higher levels of tryptophan and serotonin at night will likely aid in higher levels of melatonin, as serotonin converts to melatonin downstream. I like tryptophan over 5-htp, as many people can't handle 5-htp well and its conversion to serotonin in the brain is poor unless supplemented alongside other ingredients (plus the research advocating it isn't good but if you prefer it, have at it).

Glycine - 3-6g - One of the two primary inhibitory neurotransmitters (next to GABA). Glycine neurons are largely classified as interneurons (as interneurons are mostly inhibitory) and found heavily in the spinal cord and CNS.

Inositol - 1-2g - Formerly classified as vitamin B8, inositol enhances the effect and efficiency of neuronal communication in the brain (particularly, serotonin signaling), as it anchors signaling proteins to neurons.

Do you struggle with getting enough quality sleep?😴 Since May is #bettersleep month, I wanted to share some of my favorite hacks that can help to improve the quality of your sleep. 
Going out in the sun☀️ in the morning without sunglasses stimulates photosensitive cells in the retina that directly affect the brain’s hypothalamus region, which controls our biological clock. Sun exposure also increases production of serotonin, which is a precursor of melatonin (the hormone that controls sleep/wake cycles)

Maintain a consistent sleep schedule (even on weekends) to support your circadian rhythm 
The optimal temperature for sleep is 64 to 69 degrees F (18 to 22 C)

Reduce exposure to HEV (blue) light in the evenings by turning on Night Shift on your iPhone, downloading f.lux on your computer 💻 , wearing blue-light blocking glasses (I wear #LadyBossGlasses 👓)...or simply put away your electronic devices after dark!

Use a smart alarm clock app like Sleep Cycle, which monitors signals from your body through your phone’s microphone to wake you softly when you are in the lightest possible sleep stage

Try a magnesium supplement before bed. According to the WHO, 75% of US adults do not meet the RDI of magnesium. I take a supplement called #NaturalCalm before bed, which really helps me to fall asleep faster😴

Grateful for this device~ its ’no blue light’- light adjustment- font adjustments helps me many a night when i wake up ( feeling sick, or mind winds-up, or...). NEW TESTS ON SLEEP 😴 I'm messing with ketone esters (D-beta-hydroxybutyrate/R 1,3-butanediol Monoester aka beta-hydroxybutyrate) before bed.

While typically used for performance, there is an emerging use of "micro-dosing" pre-sleep. The typical dose I've seen (and use) is 5g of ketone ester, which has a cost of ~$3. The theory is that BOHB modulates the NLRP3 inflammasome and may improve neuroinflammation 🚒🔥

Over 4 nights, I've had ~1.75 hours of deep sleep and ~2 hours of REM. For reference, these are ~25% higher than normal but we #needmoredata .

I've used @ketoneaid and @hvmn ketone esters, with similar results. If you want to try, these are the brands I currently trust. .

↪️ I've done anaerobic/metabolic performance tests in the past with mixed (yet promising) results, but could never make a sound recommendation due to the price. This stuff is not cheap (bottle in my hand is $300) and aside from "one-and-done" sporting events (i.e. a marthon) I can't see most people consistently spending $30/serving. That said, $3 for great sleep is worth looking into 💤

NEW TESTS ON SLEEP 😴 I'm messing with ketone esters (D-beta-hydroxybutyrate/R 1,3-butanediol Monoester aka beta-hydroxybutyrate) before bed. . . While typically used for performance, there is an emerging use of "micro-dosing" pre-sleep. The typical dose I've seen (and use) is 5g of ketone ester, which has a cost of ~$3. The theory is that BOHB modulates the NLRP3 inflammasome and may improve neuroinflammation . . Over 4 nights, I've had ~1.75 hours of deep sleep and ~2 hours of REM. For reference, these are ~25% higher than normal but we #needmoredata . . I've used @ketoneaid and @hvmn ketone esters, with similar results. If you want to try, these are the brands I currently trust. . . ️ I've done anaerobic/metabolic performance tests in the past with mixed (yet promising) results, but could never make a sound recommendation due to the price. This stuff is not cheap (bottle in my hand is $300) and aside from "one-and-done" sporting events (i.e. a marthon) I can't see most people consistently spending $30/serving. Under low-light conditions our spectral sensitivity shifts from Photopic (light) to Scotopic (dark) vision. It takes a few minutes to adjust to low light when you enter a dark room.

Somebody in our household is loud when they sleep 😴 (I won’t mention any names but I share a bed with him🙉). Well, this little bottle of magic has changed that. Valor, I love you. Sleep is life and you give me life. . . Somebody in our household is loud when they sleep 😴 (I won’t mention any names but I share a bed with him). To give yourself the BEST possible chance of a decent nights sleep you've got to put some effort in! And it's not just about powering down electronic devices; you need to power down your mind too. .

Between racing from Pilates class, finishing up emails or bathing the kids, it can be hard to carve out the right time before bed, but if you can, give yourself 30 minutes of pre-sleep relaxation. Put down the device, turn off #Netflix. Have a bath; read a book. Brew a cup of sleep tea (we love @chifittea sleep blend ☕).

If you're prone to waking during the night and overplaying all the conversations you would have handled differently or going over things you need to do at work at 4am (hands-up 🙋 who does this?), simple breathing techniques can be one of the best tools to get you back to the land of nod 💤

〰️ Place the tip of your tongue against the ridge of tissue just behind your upper front teeth.
〰️ Exhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound (try not to wake your bed partner!)

Sleep has never come easy to me. As a child I can remember watching the sun come up, frustrated that I hadn’t fallen asleep yet. In college when I would work the opening shift at the pool, I had to be up at 3:50am and yet still couldn’t fall asleep. I tried everything: black out curtains, fans/heavy blankets, eat plugs, eye masks, vitamins, tea.

This little bottle is my saving grace. I rub this along my forearms, bottom of my feet, temples, across my forehead and tap a bit under my nose. If I’m really struggling I place a few drops in my palms and breath deeply for 2-3 minutes.

Speaking of melons (insert numerous other jokes here), melons are full of sugar in nature’s form.  Something, yes, that can spike our bodies blood sugar.  So is this a good thing or a bad thing? ⁣

The management of blood sugar is key for overall health and wellness.  Also, when we are trying to optimize things like fat loss and muscle synthesis.  Conversely foods that cause blood glucose to elevate are not conducive to health. ⁣

Since this overall excessive sugar/glucose  consumption has become so problematic what has the industry done?  There has been a surge of low glycemic index sweeteners come into the market in the last several years. ⁣

These sweeteners fall into three categories:⁣

🍬 Sugars that don’t impact blood glucose as much or quickly as glucose or glucose starches, low GI sugars (fructose, inulin)⁣

Ok.⁣ ⁣ Speaking of melons (insert numerous other jokes here), melons are full of sugar in nature’s form. Something, yes, that can spike our bodies blood sugar. So is this a good thing or a bad thing? ⁣ ⁣ The management of blood sugar is key for overall health and wellness. Also, when we are trying to optimize things like fat loss and muscle synthesis. Conversely foods that cause blood glucose to elevate are not conducive to health. ⁣ ⁣ Since this overall excessive sugar/glucose consumption has become so problematic what has the industry done? There has been a surge of low glycemic index sweeteners come into the market in the last several years. ⁣ ⁣ These sweeteners fall into three categories:⁣ ⁣ Sugars that don’t impact blood glucose as much or quickly as glucose or glucose starches, low GI sugars (fructose, inulin)⁣ Sugar alcohols (sorbitol, xylitol, erythritol)⁣ Nonnutritive sweeteners (acesulfame potassium, aspartame, neotame, saccharin, sucralose, as well as the “natural” sugar substitute stevia)⁣ ⁣ So wouldn’t these be ideal for our bodies if they don’t effect our blood glucose as much as “real” sugars? 🕰 Sleep - even though we encourage everyone to get 8 hrs/night, I’m a realist.  Most people are getting 6-8 hrs. So let’s call it 7 hrs/night. ⁣
Total: 49 hrs/wk⁣
⁣
🕰 Work - let’s say you are a mediocre over achiever.  You don’t toe the 40 hr/wk line, but you’re definitely not the 70-80 hr workaholic.  Let’s say you put in 5, 11 hr days and have weekends off.⁣
Total: 55 hrs/wk⁣
⁣
🕰 Commuting - you have to get to work, and home.⁣
Total: 7 hrs/week⁣
⁣
🕰 Housework/errands - We all have those fun “adult things” that make us #domesticaf 🙃 Let’s just go ahead and say we spend at least 1-2 hrs/day doing that.⁣
Total: 14 hrs/wk⁣
⁣
For those of you keeping track at home, we are up to 125 hrs total for the week.  This means we have about 43 hrs left.⁣

🕰 Family/connection time - we usually have something else in our life where we invest a significant amount of time every week.  Whether it’s kids sports, dog/cat mom things, parents, aunts, uncles, whatever it is, takes time.⁣

🕰 Exercise - you are someone who cares about your health and go to the gym 5 days a week for an hour.⁣
