Day 2 of #meetthemakerweek - Inspiration. These little collection is what got me hooked in the world of stamps. My first foray into rubber stamping was when I was about 9 or 10. My aunt had the most lovely gift shop back then in Plymouth, U.K. and she was famed locally for sourcing in beautiful and unusual gifts and stationery. She bought in the most gorgeous range of rubber stamps and ink pads from the United States and I immediately was hooked and started amassing a collection and stamping to my hearts content then and all the way through my teens.
Fast forward to post university (where I studied Retail Management) and I was looking for a hobby to fill my spare time and I dug out the old collection and was surprised to see the stamps were still in great condition and the ink pads were still as juicy as the were when they were purchased over a decade ago. So then I started expanding my collection and stamping in earnest, I was re-hooked!
However I craved to create my own designs in rubber stamp form and was thrilled when a stamp making kit came on the market but I wasn't getting great results so I looked for alternative ways to bring my designs to life. I came across the hand carving method and was immediately transported back to secondary school art classes and lino cutting. So I spent a small amount of my wages on a small block of rubber and some sharp pointy tools and was thrilled when I started getting fabulous results. Even to this day I get a thrill when I ink up and press down a freshly cut stamp so see a perfect impression greeting me on the paper.
By mid 2009 I'd already faced redundancy once that year and that fired me on to finally start fulfilling my long standing dream of starting my own business and by September that year my Etsy shop was live! Which stood me in good stead for a second redundancy in Spring 2010 and since then Skull and Cross Buns has been my full time vocation.
And here are some of my prized collection, aren't they gorgeous? And still stamp beautifully nearly 30 years later. I hope my customers get many years of enjoyment of quality stamping from mine!
