The day I realized I was a stastic had me in tears and it all has to do with being a computer scientist after college. . . A couple of months ago, I was invited to be on a panel about women and STEM. Easy. I could do my typical surface level blurb just to sound impressive. What I was not prepared for the was the speaker before me. . . She talked about the challenges that women have in STEM such as lack of mentorship, not feeling welcomed, not feeling smart enough and always having your expertise questioned. She gave a stat that most women will have a career life span of 12 years, leave, and never speak of their experience to others. Then she went deep on the issues of Black women in STEM... being on the team of the lonely and the only. . . First, I have never been in tears before going on stage and it was as if someone was playing a "this is your life" game right before me. Everything she said was true and I realized I was a statistic. . . Until recently, I never really talked about my career in STEM. I was too embarrassed about the things I had to deal with and felt like a failure for not being able to hang in there. Some days I think my business is a silent way of me mourning a career that probably could have been amazing.🤔🤔🤔 . . Now... there were some good moments (loved the traveling), but the mental aspect completely broke me... I may hold the record for the most times sitting at a bar and crying after work! . . As I prepare for my TEDx talk about girls being great in Math, I have been completely overwhelmed and speechless with how to express the ups and downs when it comes to a STEM career. . . And as I research, I am seeing the future of what MAY NOT be if we don't do something to change how women, especially women of color, are seen in the industries that have the ability to change how we live and the future of the world. . . Not 100% sure where this is going, but wanting to give voice to this has been simmering for years. Maybe now is the time??? I am not sure what my role will be in changing the landscape for women in STEM, but it may be time for me to go back to my STEM roots and toss my high heel in the ring and see what happens. 😎 - 3 months ago
