Sid and Nancy(1986) directed by Alex Cox follows the real relationship between Sex Pistols’ bassist Sid Vicious(Gary Oldman) and his girlfriend Nancy Spungen(Chloe Webb), until their eventual deaths. Their relationship is infamous for its emotional volatility, and the film puts this alarmingly on display. One moment they could be screaming and hitting each other, next they could be having sex, but most often they’ll be strung out on heroin and other drugs. The relationship is so raw and convincing, but this couldn’t have been accomplished without the spectacular performances of Gary Oldman and Chloe Webb. Both actors perfectly emulate the look of their characters, and inhabit their personalities. Webb puts Nancy’s brashness and insecurity on full display and Oldman displays the sporadic anger of Sid, molding the relationship into a perfect disaster. I love the way the film focused purely on the two’s relationship, and stayed away from becoming a biographical piece on the Sex Pistols. Along with this the film never romanticizes the drug abuse or relationship, showing the layers of toxicity the two brought to one another’s lives. The film does interestingly use magical or dream like imagery, to perhaps show how disillusioned the two were with reality, and is effective in driving the story forward. In summary, Sid and Nancy is a great character drama, with absolutely amazing performances(One of Oldman’s best), and beautiful cinematography. I highly recommend.
