Recently Jeff and I were bowling and there was a group of kids next to us, aged from 4-10ish, all boys with the exception of one girl. It was around the 5th frame and the girl, we will call her “Addison” (about 8 years old) threw the ball down the lane, quickly turned back and exclaimed, “I STINK AT BOWLING!” without even looking to see how she did. My heart sank. She actually wasn’t bad at bowling at all. She had knocked down 8 pins and was equally good, if not better, than the more confident boys.
I saw so much of myself in Addison. When I first started bowling, I walked away not waiting to see how many pins I knocked down embarrassed because I “knew” I wasn’t any good. But what crushed me was the negative self talk coming from the mouth of a child. She was beautiful, talented, funny, friendly, but her focus was on the fact that she “stinks at bowling.” How many times are you quick to put yourself down, discredit a compliment, or fail to even try something new because of the fear of failure? Why is it easier to believe the best in others but see only the worst in yourself?
If you can relate at all, listen up.....KNOCK IT OFF!!! You are teaching young girls by your actions. Addison learned this behavior. We have a duty to be kind to ourselves because others are watching. There are young girls that believe that they are not enough because they see we fail to value ourselves as enough. YOU ARE ENOUGH. Stop the negative talk. Stop believing the best in everyone but yourself. Stop limiting your capabilities. If you can’t stop the negative talk for yourself, do it for girls like Addison. In the words of Henry Ford, “Whether you think you can, or think you can’t, you are right.” Watch your world change when you start believing you can! #selftalk #lifelessons #negativeselftalk #impactothers #bekind #bekindtoyourself #speakwordsofkindness #intheeyesofachild #positivethoughts #positivewords #positivelife #bowling #bowlinglessons #lessonsfromachild #theywatchyou #bealight #girltalk #empower #empoweringwords #women #womeninfluencers #female #feminist - 1 hour ago
