Snacking on Korean food while having an evening tea. It's called 'Tteok-bokki'. I don't know, it's very strange to me. Never heard the name before, let alone eating it. I had to ask my daughter a few times before I could have it registered on my mind. I couldn't even trust my ears to have it spelled out. It needs to be mentored.
My daughter Fara came up with it.
It tastes quite good but I've nothing to relate to it to evoke my past memories. It's imperative to note that, the type of cuisine that laced with sentiments, past memories, childhood memories and whatnot, would bring inexplicable added pleasure to it. What I can possibly relate with is the craze of my kids toward Korean K-pop songs when they were in their teenage years some 10 years ago especially for my daughter. Anything Korean perceived to be good if not exotic. I even drove her to a concert when Korean Pop Band troupe made an appearance in Kuala Lumpur back then.
Tteok-bokki is made from rice cakes and other stuffs like fish cakes, boiled eggs, cabbage and scallions — those are some of the most commonly added ingredients, so I'm told. They're stirred together with chilli paste and soy sauce, mind you all are Koreans'. Local brands simply won't add up. The one she came up with for us this afternoon is by use of curry-tteok-bokki paste readily sold in the supermarket.
Tteok-bokki surely is a new experience to me. It tastes good and I can enjoy it just as much but not the type of food that I'd crazily hunt for at eatery places somewhere.
