INGREDIENT ALERT/ PHTHALATES 🏼♀️ THE WHAT + WHY / Pronounced “thal-ates; AKA: DEHP, DEP, DBP + others. Phthalates are a group of chemicals made from petroleum used in personal care products and are used to soften and increase the flexibility of plastics and polyvinyl chloride (PVC). In the U.S. population — studies have shockingly found them in the bodies of 98% of people tested. Used in personal care products, phthalates improve texture, increase spreadability, and enhance absorption. Phthalates are found in everything from cosmetics, air fresheners, insecticides, building materials, containers for food and drinks, cars, clothing, toys, electronics, medical devices and even Mardi Gras beads!
WHY AVOID / Phthalates are classified as “endocrine disruptors,” chemicals that have the potential to interfere with the body’s hormone system. Exposure has been linked to changes in genital formation, decreased birth rate of boys, early puberty (a risk factor for later-life breast cancer and reproductive harm in males), DNA damage to sperm, & decreased sperm counts. They’ve been associated with birth defects, lowered IQ behavioral problems, type 2 diabetes, & obesity. What makes me the most sad is phthalates are shown to be more concentrated in infants and children.
GOOD NEWS / making small changes to avoid these is simple & immediately reduces your body burden. You can shift what you purchase today to start having an impact!
HOW AVOID / 2 phthalates often used in cosmetics (dibutyl and diethylhexyl) have been banned in the European Union and are perfectly legal in the US - Tips: 🏼♀️Avoid Plastics (particularly #3 and #7 ) & non PVC packaging as they leach phthalates into foods. 🏼♀️Avoid anything with the word “fragrance” as an ingredient: there can be up to 500 chemicals in any one fragrance oil, & since fragrances are considered proprietary, they are not required to list on the ingredients label. When you are using cosmetics that contain phthalates, you absorb the toxic material through your skin, which goes into your bloodstream.
🏼♀️Avoid older used plastic toys & vinyl shower curtains. The familiar “new shower curtain smell” is made up of VOCs - 15 hours ago
