Topic Today: Happy Easter and home
Usually, Easter is, as much as any other holiday, a time of the year in which I’d like to be home. Studying abroad all of the time however has made it complicated to share all holidays at home. But thinking about that this morning I started to wonder: What even is home? And what makes us feel at home?
According to Frank T. McAndrew Ph.D. home relates to an ‘attachment to place’ - which is related to a greater satisfaction with your home and expectations of stability. A study showed that most of us (26%) regard ‘home’ as the place we were born and raised, while 22% regard it the place where they live now. Also, interestingly, when being asked to draw a picture of the concept of home, most children and adolescents worldwide centre their drawing around the home itself, especially girls. The home as a house or else is the anchor for everything else.
Frank T. McAndrew Ph.D. ends his insights by giving a smart advice: If you know what home is for you, ask yourself why this place of all is home for you. This will then give you a deeper understanding of how you think about yourself and how you are connected with the world as such.
And on a wonderful Easter Sunday as it is today, I hope you find sometime to reflect in the spring sun and maybe you stumble upon a few insights about yourself that will also help you with homesickness should you, like me, not be home for the holidays.
