What a great way to have started the day striding it out for a nice reprieve and change of pace with Brisbane’s weather totally rocking it for the first time while I’ve been back. Compared to the overcast and heavy torrential rain the last few days. As it was just one of those runs where it just felt great to be outside doing what I love spent with great company hitting up the streets of Brisbane while on my way to an unexpected and my fastest midweek 12km group run in absolutely ages.

This is my version of a post-work happy hour session! Four miles in Pac Heights and and all it’s hills! GAH. In an attempt to log more pre-sunset outdoor miles during the week, I decided to take my running gear to work and do my run from the office at the end of the day versus going home first and then going to the gym. It worked out well and I’m glad I now have the rest of the evening to relax and hang out at home with Pepper. Not sure how often I will get to to this because it requires paying for a dog walker midday which can get expensive, but I can definitely do it at least once a week. Release the lats to regain full range and function of your posterior sling.

As your opposite knee and arm come forward during a stride, the fascia stretches across your back in a diagonal fashion. It then slings your arm and leg back towards their starting position, hence the name. The fascia needs to be able to glide easily over the big meaty lats to work efficiently and after a lot of reps (aka a long run) things can get tacked down 🚫

✅ Use this mobilization to help restore the integrity of the lats and the fascia. 1-2’ smashing around on each side should do the job and don’t ignore the breathing:
1. Inhale into the lax ball
2. Hold and contract into the lax ball

First run 8 days after #MyChicagoMarathon #ChicagoMarathon ... this has definitely been my longest period of rest ... but almost feeling 100% after "the fall" and battling a cold and flu ...

🎃🕞👻4 super easy miles this evening - first run since Chicago - 💙 8 days of complete rest go by rather quickly when you spend most of that time sleeping 😎 and trying to recover from a nasty cold 😷🀧 Been feeling much better the last 2 days or so, still have a lingering runny nose 😒 but my energy levels are up & my body feels human again 😊 Easing back into training the rest of this week - keeping mileage & intensity low to not overwhelm my healing body. Longest run so far keeping 6mph on the treadmill 🏃‍♀ Treadmill is tough, friends! Well, at least for me. It’s a crazy cardio challenge for me 😛 You don’t really get to run at your own pace the way road runs allow you to. You just keep at it, with the number you set on the screen, that’s it 🀷🏻‍♀ I couldn’t even take a moment to slow down to gulp my saliva 🀪 okay, TMI?

So this was actually closer to 3.75 miles but I accidentally stopped recording for what was almost a quarter mile. This was a great run! I'm loving the weather so much. #transformationtuesday A quick snapshot summary of my run history this year. 
5 HM in the books for 2018; each one teaching me about self-growth. This is so much more about numbers. But the numbers will teach me how to get stronger & faster.

FEB 2018- Hypothermic half- 2: 17: 51

May 2018 :WPS half- 2: 06: 59

June 2018: MH half- 2:12:49

Sept 2018- Seawheeze half-.2:05:12

Oct 2018- WFPS half- 2:00:05

My biggest lesson- never take physical ability for granted. In May, I injured myself for the 1st time ever & developed a leg tendonitis from overtraining on the hills... I spent the rest of the spring & summer trying to get better  and re-strengthening. It took a VERY long time to get better.

2nd biggest lesson- I want it. I want to get better. I want to be insanely strong. I want to be fast. Actually, I want to be super human fast. I want the unicorn.

3rd biggest lesson- I know I can do! And its gonna take a lot of grit...And a lot of changes to my training and eating habits. but I know I want it.

IT. CHANGES. YOU. Running changes you. And this is why I love this sport. 💗💗 I'm already scheming next years goals and races. I must still be on this runners' high!..because this all sounds kinda crazy. but if your goals don't scare you, it ain't large enough.  It's gonna  be all about FULL marathons next year & doing the distance.. and working on speed.

You know you are in Texas when you experience the first major cold front that cause a drastic drop in high temperature from 90 degrees to 50 😁 A real drastic change that I have to admit is coming perfectly on time. Don’t Overdo Your Cardio
Truth be told you can get lean without doing any #cardio at all.
If we refer back to the rules of the energy balance equation, we can see that provide you’re in a calorie deficit you will lose weight regardless of whether or not you’re doing any cardio or not.
However, where cardio can be useful in 2 key ways;
•Allowing you to eat more food when in a calorie deficit
•Assisting with the loss of body fat
🔻The question now becomes which type of cardio should you do to get these benefits?
The 2 contenders are;
1•Low-intensity steady state (LISS)
2•High-intensity interval training (HIIT).
#LISS is characterised by long bouts of walking, jogging or cycling usually around an hour in length to burn calories without taxing the body. Whereas, #HIIT is characterised by short bursts of sprinting or other anaerobic activity followed by a period of rest or recovery before being repeated, usually lasting 10 – 30 minutes in total.
📌What Does The Research Say?
Ultimately, whilst HIIT wins out in the research I believe that whichever form of exercise works best for your lifestyle is the best. Maybe that’s a mix of both, maybe it’s none at all. If you can do some HIIT, great. If not then don’t worry as we said before you can get ‘lean’ without using cardio at all.
📌How Much Is Too Much?
Ultimately, what I would say is this, don’t do cardio for cardio’s sake. Do it because you enjoy it and want to get the benefits. There’s nothing worse than having to force yourself to go for a #run because you think you need to, exercise shouldn’t be associated with negative feelings. Sure, it will hurt sometimes and it should challenge you but it shouldn’t be a chore.

Why high-intensity exercises are as beneficial as longer workout sessions

Got no time for exercising? Well, a few minutes of high-intensity interval or sprinting exercise may be as effective as much longer workout sessions, as per a new study. Mitochondria, the energy centres of the cells, are essential for good health. Previous research has found that exercise creates new mitochondria and improves the function of existing ones. Altered mitochondrial function in response to a single session of exercise generates signals that may lead to beneficial changes in the cells, lowering the risk for chronic disease.
High-intensity interval exercise consists of short bursts of high-intensity aerobic exercise physical activity that raises the heart rate alternating with brief recovery periods. Whether the intensity of a workout affects mitochondrial response is unclear. The research team measured the amount of energy the volunteers spent on each workout and compared mitochondrial changes in the participants’ thigh muscles before and after each exercise session.
The researchers found that levels of hydrogen peroxide — a type of molecule involved in cell signalling called “reactive oxygen species” that contains oxygen and hydrogen — in different parts of the mitochondria change after exercise. While too much reactive oxygen species can be damaging to the cells, the researchers noted that the volunteers’ levels were an appropriate amount to potentially promote cell responses that benefit metabolic function rather than cause damage.
In addition, the research team found that fewer minutes of higher-intensity exercise produced similar mitochondrial responses compared to a longer moderate-intensity activity.
