Hello everyone! I am Anna Maskava, visual artist from Latvia. This week I’ll be sharing my project Mørketid with you. Mørketid is a multi-layered project created as a result of synthesis between performance art and photography. It is focused on intimate and personal experience of illness – depression is both the catalyst of the works of art and the leading motif of the artistic strategy.
Synthesising the media of photography and performance art, I visualize the psychoemotional and physical condition of an individual suffering from depression, for example, obsessive thoughts, anxiety, apathy, insomnia, loss of interest, etc. The self-portraits are implemented in romantically poetic aesthetics, where I do not document my experience, but try to distance myself from it, constructing generalised and abstract images. Such a performative approach is based on the desire to universalize the personal story, leaving enough space for interpretation, as well as to visually articulate the experience of illness, which is often difficult to describe or define in words. ----------------
