Recycling is a conversation topic that comes up often at the shop’s pop up stalls. .
Although many people have now gotten into the habit of always sorting their rubbish from recycling, not many people realise that in the UK "recycling" can often be more of a myth than a reality.
For decades, the UK government did not invest in its recycling infrastructure, unlike other countries in the EU. Instead, it shipped its recycling overseas to developing countries (China, Malaysia, etc.) with poor waste infrastructures and no way to be realistically accountable for what happened to waste that was sent over. .
Not only that many types of plastic - anything contaminated with food, or coloured plastics, are essentially of such little value that they aren't worth recycling.
If you haven't already, I urge you to check your local council's website and see where your recycling really goes. Mine goes straight to an incinerator, which the council markets as a good solution.
I'll let you decide if burning plastic is a good idea for the environment.... 🙃
Instead, please consider REUSING what you already own, REDUCING any future purchases (or choosing eco-friendly options like all the items stocked in the shop) and only then considering RECYCLING if you have no choice but to buy single-use plastic items.
If you're lucky enough to live in a borough with food waste collection, don't forget about ROT - composting is a hugely important part of keeping rubbish out of landfill. .
So, have you made the mental switch from recycling to reusing / reducing just yet? If not, what challenges are you facing? Comment down below! x
