Not your typical #transformationtuesday but 6 months ago I could barley squat 120x6!! I am now able to squat 210!!!! We always tend to look at the physical transformations and forget about the strength we have gained in the process!!! 💪💪💪

👙Cardio for Powerlifting👙

Part 1.

Powerlifting is an anaerobic sport, so should you be doing cardio for powerlifting? There are so many different types of cardio...what kind of cardio should you do for Powerlifting?

First, YES: aerobic exercise is good for your cardiovascular fitness regardless, so including some form of cardio is a good idea for overall health & wellness.

BUT: smart cardio is also a great way to increase your recovery capability within your workouts, which means more *high quality* reps per session, which should always be a goal! If you find yourself struggling to recover between sets (or even within a set during hypertrophy phases), this might be a way you can improve performance. 
ALSO: if you're cutting weight for a meet, adding a form of cardio (more on what kind soon) can help increase your caloric deficit and allow you to eat more of the calories you'll need to recover from training sessions. Assuming you're in meet prep, this is an important factor!

So ask yourself what your current training priority is, and check back next week to find out how to decide what type of cardio to include for your goals.

To all my lifter friends, have you experienced the burn of a barbel on sunburnt skin? WELL IT SUCKS. Please wear sunscreen yall, note the pain in my face in the videos lol. On top of that I dropped a plate on my foot and it hurt like a butt cheek on a stick (flip to last photo to see the damage). DESPITE sunburn and DESPITE my achy foot, I still got it done. DESPITE any issues we are going through, we still hold the choice to keep going and pushing through. We all are busy, we all have school or work (or both) and we still make shit happen! So I guess despite is the word of the day, and I'm okay with that.

Wore my hair down because I didn’t have a hair tie, and then I missed a squat . . . officially quitting powerlifting to write booty plans. 😤
- 295x2.  Plan was to work up to max double.
- 305 failure.  Definitely not a strength issue.  Moved the plates because I had been standing over the holes.  New placement made it hard for me to get in position to unrack the weight.  All mental from there.  Next time.  Either way, wraps are progressing nicely.
- 325x5 walkouts for 15-20 second holds.
And the new trend, drop set hell.  But I’m growing!

NEED MORE GLUTE WORK. Ahh the essential to a solid lock out in a deadlift. There’s always room for more glute work and it’s important and helpful in so many ways. In this case my lock out would have been smoother. Always a work in progress 🤛🏻

Another day, anoTHER REP PR 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 RPE 8 for 5 x 100, RPE 7 for 5 x 95 (lbs not kilos) 😭😭😭 This is the easiest bench has moved ever in my whole life (since I started two months ago LOL) and my baby arch is growing so here’s to that 🙆🏻‍♀️🙆🏻‍♀️🙆🏻‍♀️ last time I tried to bench 100 I could only do 2 and I almost died 😺 honestly I don’t have anything else to say except so far this week has been full of great workouts ♥️ I mean there have only been two but still 😎 this is the last week for a while where I’ll have the freedom to workout for 3-3.5 hours a session, so you bet I’m milking it 🥳🥳 K thx byeee ✌🏻✌🏻✌🏻

Last set - 3 sets of 3 at 60kg (rep PB) I’ll take the good out of the bad today! We were going to try a 3RM of 65 (2.5kg over my 1RM) 👎🏼 This is not 65 🙄. HAPPY to be repping 60 finally though! When I unracked the 65kg I went “oh this doesn’t feel so heavy) and then lost it 🤦🏼‍♀️! Mind over matter with me & Bench. But very happy with last 4 weeks all lifts! I usually trim the gym foolery from these guys but felt obliged to keep it for this one. Powerlifting is really a mental sport. Who wakes up and says, on any given day, “let’s go throw around 300+ pounds today”..not most. And some days we wake up feeling so tired, why isn’t this weight moving? But then there’s these guys that remind you: you can do this, wake the f*ck up. Shout out to my favorite people @smash_iron @elite_conditioning @bboycharacter for the push to get out of my head and lift the weight.

About JOSH TAIT

Josh Tait is the head strength coach and owner of Eastside Barbell, a powerlifting gym located on the Bayside of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.

Having coached since 2009, he has helped numerous clients to wins on the bodybuilding and powerlifting circuits through out Australia. His competitive career began on the bodybuilding stage, winning 3 shows before finishing in 2013 as the overall Queensland Champion. As a bodybuilding coach, his clients have achieved 12 x 1st, 6 x 2nd, 6 x 3rd.

His passion and focus rests with powerlifting and strength training. He knows how to train his clients for real, substantial strength and body composition changes.

He is also an established powerlifter himself, having competed since 2013 and claiming multiple bench press records across 2 weight classes. Since 2013, he has improved his powerlifting total from 727.5kg to 912.5kg, currently ranking him 5th all time in Australia in the 125kg weight class. His best raw lifts in competition are a 332.5kg squat, 257.5kg bench press, 330kg deadlift.

Good lord I need to work on my setup. I need something super cool instead of approaching the bar like I’m losing my balance on ice skates (what am I doing with my hands). Speed pulls against bands @185 here. Had heavy block pulls too but my CNS just laughed and shook its CNS head and said “Not today, Satan). Although a sad attempt at bench today I chucked 70kg in anyway. I really pushed myself yesterday with my shoulder session haha. What the heck is that muscle under my arm?!!! First lift after a very long weekend of excitement and traveling and first lift back at home. Not bad but could be better and so much work to do before my next meet. 9 months in and can’t wait to see where my journey takes me. Shoutout to @frostbournefitness for the awesome atmosphere!!

It’s been WEEKS since I’ve gone to the gym.
Since I’ve lifted heavy.
Since I’ve followed a program.

I was burnt out, dreading every workout. I felt stagnant and bored.

I decided to ditch the program I was on and just do workouts at home - whatever I felt like doing.
Sometimes just body weight, sometimes HIIT, sometimes using our garage gym.

While I didn’t make tons of physical progress from just messing around every day, it was certainly the break my mind and body needed.

This week I started a new powerbuilding program, and I’m sooooo ready to hit the heavy weights again!
Yesterday’s deadlifts ended with a set of 180x6 and it felt like 250 💀💦
But it felt damn. good.

Started hybrid 101 today. Here's a 5 rep max at 225. Not bad for not really lifting for like, 3 months.

Welp today was...a day. Between work life, gym life and real life I’m kinda over it. Today was leg day. Did some box squats and decided to try for 225 for the first time in almost 2 months (swipe right)...they were not pretty and singles were all I could manage for 5 sets. Feel like I’m struggling with hip mobility and dropping down between my hips in the hole. Will be focusing on improving my squat but for now, enjoy these shit lifts ✌🏻
