Started with this 278kg which felt awesome.  @tsubifit picked the numbers perfectly ⚪⚪⚪ Following was another single at 272.5kg then this double PB at 262.5kg.

So this board is mysteriously turned up at the gym a few weeks ago. I don't know where it came from, or who made it, but I'm the first person I've seen use it. Hit 3x45 touch and go, which is pretty bloody cool considering I only just got 1x47.5 paused.

Someone at work today asked me if I was in a bit of a funk. The answer was "ah... yep... I think I am" 😶

The combination of this back injury & work being hectic has played havoc on my training motivation & nutrition ... which in turn is making work & my injury more stressful 🤦‍♀️ And with me in a funk.

Silver lining? I can still train relatively pain free. And i have an amazing coach who has put up with my cranky ass for weeks now, all while writing a thesis, training his other clients (and himself), planning a PL comp, having his own life & working. And for that I am grateful 🙌

So we have definitely figured out what my issue was with my bench. Weak serratus on my left causing scap winging. Going to be doing as much as I can in the next 12 weeks to rectify this before I get on the platform. Deadlifts going well and am keen to move into the next block with these 😎

240kg deadlift tonight. Considering deadlifts have been feeling shit, I guess I can't complain with an equal PR. In the last few days, I've hit a 210kg squat (+10kg PR), 145kg bench (+5kg PR), and a 240kg deadlift (equal PR). Giving me a training total of 595kg (+25kg PR). Cas had a testing day last week and knocked off some huge milestones at only 59kg BW. She joined the ranks in September last year with the goal of getting stronger in the powerlifting movements and also improving her resilience to injury as she works as a paramedic.

What we did over the last 8 months to improve her performance in the gym:

1. We addressed some deficiencies in her ankle mobility and lack of anterior core strength and this had a big carryover to her squat.
2. Her back, hamstrings and glutes were weak and there was a lot of form breakdown in her deadlift because of this. She chewed through plenty of GHRs, RDLs and barbell rows to improve this. Her deadlift responded positively.
3. Increase frequency in the bench press. We got her benching 3 times a week in order to ingrain the skill. She worked hard on getting a consistent setup and holding a hard arch throughout an entire set.

Since September, this is her progress in the 3 powerlifting movements:
Squat: 70kg to 115kg (45kg increase)
Bench Press: 45kg to 63kg (18kg increase)
Deadlift: 100kg to 132.5kg (32.5kg increase)

Gym total of 310kg

Finally some low box squats for cardio. 5 minutes (totalled just over 50 reps without putting the bar back with 85kg). I put on 52.5kg on my squat since May 3 (started at 160kg). I reckon next few months I’ll focus on low box squats and lockouts 💪

Jakob came in for his session today and his first sets of squats and bench were rough. His form was ordinary, bar speed was down, and he was struggled to hit the prescribed reps  Pulldowns were okay, but.

After talking some, he told me he had done his jiu jitsu training last night. So he's most likely still fatigued from that, and his performance suffered today. The good news is, we'll just regress him a little bit to a more appropriate and manageable load, and he'll adapt and start progressing again 💪

Last bench session of prep.
Not the best but singles moved well with no breakfast or handouts so counting the wins.
Singles at: 50/52.5/55
Now for rest and a couple of light sessions before comp day!
So many lessons learnt this prep shaking off the negatives, hanging onto the wins and going in to Sunday with a majorly positive and happy attitude!

This study found that for "conventional" resistance training longer rest periods (3 mins, compared to 1 min) are better. And in most other cases this is true. In some, however, it's not. When it comes down to it the goal of training is to accrue an increasing amount of work in a certain condition or at a certain output. The goal of effective modailities like Myo-reps, rest-pause and drop sets is to work in a fatigued state, and so long rest periods are not ideal.

In 2016, Schoenfeld et al. tested the effects of different rest intervals on muscle hypertrophy, strength and endurance 💪 (@bradschoenfeldphd)

They compared the effects of 1min vs. 3 min rest between resistance training sets ⏱

The training program lasted 8 weeks, had a training frequency of 3x per week and included: back squat, leg press, leg extension, bench press, seated military press, lat pulldown and cable row 🏋🏻‍♂️

At the end of 8 weeks, the authors saw that hypertrophy favoured the long rest compared to the short rest 📈

The quad was the only muscle thickness measurement to reach statistical significance, however, there was a greater effect size in the long vs. short rest for the triceps (0.37 vs. 0.03) and for the biceps (0.39 vs 0.18) 😃
