Book Review: The Accident by Gail Schimmel (#gifted ). ____________________________________________
Plot: Since The Accident, Catherine is emotionally detached from her life and from her adult daughter, Julia. Julia, on the other hand, is having an affair with her best friend's husband.
My Thoughts: to be honest, I'm not a fan of this novel. Firstly, the writing is a little too choppy and the exposition is contrived. Secondly, even though this novel is supposedly about The Accident and how it affected Catherine and Julia's lives, the novel mainly follows Julia, Claire (Julia's best friend) and Daniel (Claire's husband and Julia's future boyfriend). Also, most of the characters are insufferable and their development is rushed or non-existent. Julia's character doesn't really develop (she's the I'm-not-like-other-girls type) and Daniel is a lazy man-child. Some of the characters are stereotypes - like the gay, black friend whose main objective in the novel is to be the gay black friend. If you're going to add a sliver of diversity to a novel, at least give the diverse character some depth.
Thirdly, some major plot points and revelations are glossed over in this novel. There are certain events in the book that are meant to be emotionally traumatic for the characters but these characters, with the exception of Catherine, seem to move on pretty fast. (SPOILER) I find it too convenient that Claire quickly forgives Julia for having an affair with her husband and Julia's reaction to the truth about The Accident is explained in only a few sentences.
I wanted to like this novel but it's just not my cup of tea. What are you currently reading? Let me know below! #burgundyxbooks - 5 hours ago
