Polaroid No. 2
Playa Costa del Sol, El Salvador // Summer 2006
🎞 Spectra Color Film
One thing that not too many people know about me is that when I started getting into film, I started on an old Polaroid Spectra. Currently I own about 6 Polaroid instant cameras. My love and passion for Polaroid started as a child because my father was a photographer and not only did he work for Polaroid, but I also have many childhood memories of him taking photos of me and the family with his various instant cameras throughout the years.
I shot this series of Polaroids in the summer of 2006 when my husband and I traveled to visit my father in San Salvador, El Salvador, where he was living at the time. We stayed with my dad for three weeks.
On this day my husband and I wanted to get out of the city and go to the beach, so we traveled to a beautiful remote beach town called Playa Costa del Sol on the coast of El Salvador.
On that day, I remember the beach was not crowded at all, no tourists (besides us) and there were only locals going about their day. I felt at ease and comfortable enough to take out my Polaroid and approach passers by to take their photo. This fearlessness of approaching strangers was something I used to have and I feel that I’ve lost this over the years. I tense up and get shy to ask. Maybe it’s a fear of rejection and not wanting to intrude. That is why there are not too many people portraits in my photos anymore.
