Is it a good idea to use up Earth's resources to go to Mars?!?
100,000 years ago, was it a good idea to use Africa’s resources to go to Asia and Europe and colonize those continents?
50,000 years ago, was it a good idea to use Papua’s resources to cross the sea to Australia and colonize it?
What about using Siberian resources 15,000 years ago to cross the Bering sea and go to America and colonize it?
Making our civilization a space civilization and accessing the infinite resources of space will have a huge economic impact on our future. It will also reduce the existential risks of being confined to only one planet.
Elon Musk is the right person in the right time to catalyze this process. His company, SpaceX, had managed to reduce launch cost to orbit from $10,000 per kg, to $2,000 per kg. His company was able to develop a heavy launch system, the Falcon Heavy, 3/4 reusable, at 1/3 of the time and 1/13 of the cost of NASA’s future heavy launch system.
If he is successful in his next project, the fully reusable Starship / Superheavy, he will be able to reduce launch cost to orbit to $200 / kg. This will open up Mars, and the rest of the solar system. The benefits to humanity will be enormous, worth many many trillions.
To learn more about the huge benefits of space, you can read the newly released book:
The Case for Space: How the Revolution in Spaceflight Opens Up a Future of Limitless Possibility
