Something really important I want to bring up, and I think in this industry is really over looked. Being in the hair and makeup game can pave the way to be working for extremely long hours & standing for long periods of time.  This is includes leaning over, overuse of the shoulder and neck muscles etc... not having  the correct postural knowledge has left both Ciara & my self with back problems that has affected us. I’m sure many of you in this industry will agree the affects of being on your feet for long period time has its down falls. So it’s something we got thinking about for our students & by giving them the knowledge they need this will help them avoid these long term affects. So we have joined forces with @alan.dunne.127 who is the owner of Peak Physique a physical therapist & who deals with many women in our industry who have these problems & he will be giving our students some invaluable knowledge about postural correction and the importance of it! Only wish we had of know this when we started out. We are so grateful to have this opportunity & to have Alan in with the students going forward on all new terms at Matte to Metallic! 👆The original intent is to focus on one particular article, but this first one has to be two, by the same author- Dr. Scott F. Dye, MD. I have not met him, seen any of his patients or even seen him speak. I do greatly appreciate both of these articles though.

1️⃣The first one is on the concept of ‘Envelope of Function’. A topic I am assuming we are familiar with❓

While social media and folks like @running.physio (thanks Yom) have made this popular, this topic has been around since 1996. I also remember several discussions with @robert_manske about this, including teaching this to our Wichita State PT students in the mid 2000’s.

A unique concept in that time.

2️⃣The more intriguing study to me was his 1998 study. With only local anesthesia injected into the portal sites, Dr. Dye was the actual subject in this study-having both knees inspected arthroscopically.
--
Using a calibrated, spring-loaded device from 0 to 500g of force used by a coauthor, Dr. Dye subjectively graded  the sensation to each area. As per diagram, the fat pad was by far the most sensitive. Makes sense, a highly neurovascular structure.
--
👆Per the authors, the study confirmed that most intra-articular structures of the knee have sensory mechanisms that can result in conscious proprioception.
--
They felt the perception of palpated articular cartilage (aneural tissue) probably represented a sensation arising from transmission of sensory stimulating loads to subchondral bone in areas of thinner cartilage vs the cartilage itself.❓❓❓

😲‼️He had both of his knees scoped, 1 week apart, with only local anesthesia. That is taking a big one for the team.

OVERHEAD LUNGES W/ KETTLEBELLS , SINGLE ARMS AND BOTH ARMS. 
Kettlebell Lunges are an extremely powerful exercise for developing strong legs and buttocks (glutes). The kettlebell lunge is also a great exercise to improve single leg strength as well as developing mobility in the hips which is excellent for sports and general movement skills

"Are You Investing in Your Body's Bank Account or Withdrawing?"

I heard this quote recently from @briancarroll81 on a podcast and it speaks volumes.  This is a great analogy that can help get the point across to athletes and clients about training, recovery, etc. ———————————————
Far too often, athletes and clients will train hard session after session after session and either don't allow their body to recovery sufficiently, aren't getting enough sleep, training with poor program design, etc.  There are so many factors that can contribute to this.

I always tell my athletes and clients to make sure they are doing the necessary things such as self-myofasial release, deload weeks, switching up their lifts month to month, trying different training options (ie. front squats vs back squats), etc.  By doing these things as well as many others, this allows the athlete to invest in their body's bank account vs withdrawing from it all the time.  Eventually, they will have "nothing left in their body's bank account".

💥EARLY STAGE EXERCISES FOR NON-SURGICAL ACL REHAB💥

This is a patient of mine who sustained a grade 3 (full thickness tear) anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) sprain, a grade 2 (partial tear) medial collateral ligament (MCL) sprain, and a medial meniscal injury. 
Historically this is considered a “devistating”, “tragic”, “lifechanging” injury, which leads individuals to believe their knee is broken. 
WE NEED TO STOP GENERATING FEAR AROUND ACL INJURIES!!! A growing body of evidence is emerging which challenges our previous beliefs around the ACL, and the absolute requirement to have reconstruction, followed by 9-12 months of exhaustive rehab. 
In 2015 an English Premier League (EPL) player famously returned to pre-injury sport in 8 weeks, and continued to perform at a high enough standard to be resigned the following season. 
He also had no dysfunction or pain 2 years post injury!!! The first thing patients need to understand and be educated, is that they have a choice. They should not feel pressured into immediate reconstruction, and in fact if they do wait at least 3 months while continuing with a structured strength and physio program, post surgical outcomes are better, or they may not need surgery at all. 
So here's what you should know:
•  You CAN return to pivoting sports without an ACL; not one group study shows you cannot perform pivoting sports without an ACL (Grindem et al 2012).
•  Your knee DOES NOT degenerate faster if you don’t have an ACL reconstruction (Filbay 2018).
•  A torn ACL CAN re-attach and heal (Costa-Paz et al 2013, Van Meer et al 2014, Fujimoto et al 2002).
•  There are NO confirmed greater risks involved with conservative management, and in-fact do not involve the risks associated with surgery (Apaul 2016)
•  ACL reconstruction IS NOT superior to conservative management (Frobell et al 2013, Rooney 2018, Smith et al 2014). ACL sprains should be treated like ankle sprains. We do not need MRI to diagnose, and we should not scare our patients into a a decision they don't fully understand.

Physiotherapy, and strength and conditioning for a minimum of 3 months prior to making a decision about surgery is best practice!!

How might you communicate this your client and will they be able to leave the clinic and explain what you did to someone else? If the client doesn’t understand what you’re doing or why you’re doing it, then we are building from a shaky platform and this may influence the long-term outcome of your treatment.

Once we establish the ability to explain things in simple terms, we then dive deeper. We ultimately want our clients to be empowered with the ability to take control of their own health, and we can’t do that by delivering passive manual techniques that make the therapist sweat, or exercises that require constant cueing. We all may know a lot about the brain and body, but your client may not. Establishing this connection and ability to communicate well is key.

Traditionally bridge pose has always been used as a modified variation of wheel. 😐
.
However, if you want to improve your wheel...bridge pose isn’t going to get you very far. 🤷‍♀️
.
If your shoulders are in EXTENSION...meaning arms by the sides. We are not prepping as well as we could be. ❌
.
If you truly want to prep for wheel...we need to focus more on the upper back (thoracic) extension and shoulder (flexion) upward rotation...along with lengthening our front hip flexors.👊🏼
.
When we don’t and then try to force ourselves into wheel. Your most likely to compensate into the low back or by internally rotating the shoulders (elbows out) putting the spine and rotator cuff muscles at risk. 😫
.
So next time you want to “prep” for wheel...try these instead. ✅

World Meningitis Day is globally observed on the 24th of April every year, to raise awareness about this dreadful but preventable disease. 
Meningitis is the inflammation of the membranes, known as meninges that protect the brain and spinal cord from infection and direct physical injury. The infection of the meninges by microorganisms such as bacteria or viruses results in the condition known as Meningitis, a very serious infection that can lead to death if left untreated.  This year, the NCDC seeks to increase awareness on the signs, symptoms and the devastating after-effects that it can have the extreme importance of early diagnosis and treatment, and the crucial need to support Meningitis survivors and their families.

Today’s post continues the examination of two Cartilage Structures associated with the Hyoid Bone and the lower Pharynx – the Thyroid Cartilage and the Cricoid Cartilage. This post again focusses on the Thyroid Cartilage.

👀 In the Male, the Thyroid Cartilage projects forwards. This gives rise to the Laryngeal Prominence or Adam’s Apple. The two Laminae meet in a V-shaped notch – the Superior Thyroid Notch. This can be easily palpated just above the Laryngeal Prominence.

👀 On the sides of the Laminae are two projections – the Superior Tubercle and the Inferior Tubercle. They are joined by a slight ridge – the Oblique Line, which is a major Muscle Attachment. The posterior Border of each Lamina is prolonged upward and downward to form two projections – the Superior Horn and the Inferior Horn. The Superior Horn points upwards and backwards, the Inferior Horn points downwards.

🔹Al ponernos tanto frío como calor en una zona dolorosa, en la mayoría de los casos lo único que conseguimos es “engañar” a nuestro cerebro enmascarando el dolor con este otro estímulo térmico. Como parece lógico, los resultados perdurarán sólo a corto plazo y no atajará el problema de raíz.

🎯Con esto no quiero decir que no haya que ponerse nada. En algunos casos reducir el dolor tras una lesión mediamte estos procedimientos, nos permitirá realizar otras técnicas que nos ayuden de verdad en el medio plazo.

⚠(Por supuesto, en procesos inflamatorios agudos no sería recomendable un exceso de calor, que exacerbe el proceso, ni cortar completamente la inflamación con el hielo, ya que ésta forma parte del proceso natural de regeneración tisular. Lo mejor en estos casos sería acudir a un/a profesional que valorase el caso en concreto.)

☑En resumen, si te sienta bien uno u otro, adelante, pero ten en cuenta que la importancia de esto en el proceso general es bastante escasa. Un buen tratamiento no debería estar basado únicamente en el frío/calor, sino que debería incorporar independientemente algún tipo de estímulo regenerativo para el tejido, como el movimiento.

Conforme já foi falado em vários posts por diversas pessoas, inclusive eu, não há motivos para temer o leite a menos que você tenha algum tipo de restrição. ..:: 28 DAY MOBILITY CHALLENGE ::.. The 28 day mobility challenge was designed for anyone who gets a tight lower back, tight through the hips, or just wants to Move Better, Feel Better, Be Better.

It is a 4 week progression of exercises designed to loosen up those tight areas, strengthen those weak areas and get you performing at your best.

The Idea of the movement challenge is to be performed every day, either do it first thing in the morning, in the evening when watching your favourite show, or just before you work out. 
My suggestion is to perform it at part of your warm up routine before you exercise. 
It will help improve range of motion, get the right muscles working, and improve recovery.
