I can’t tell you how powerful this picture is.
Just prior to this the 32 people I was with had to race against eachother up and down Blood Root (a 6 mile and 3,500ft tall mountain), finding certain mushrooms at the top as a well as a few other things. When you got down the mountain to the next meeting point you had to build a fire from scratch and make a cup of chaga tea before 16 other people did. If you did not- you were out. .
Moments before this I had just finished speeding up and down the mountain. As I began building my fire and making the tea, I noticed others around me sharing fires, which I didn’t see as being right. I built my own fire, but had a small leak in my aluminum foil cup. I was told to rebuild the cup and call the guy in charge back over. As he walked over to me the second time, the 16th person was okayed.
He came over to take my bib.
In this picture, I was fighting myself- although they took my bib I needed to mentally stay in the race because I knew there was a chance they’d “bargain” with us to be back in. I was physically and mentally drained, my muscles felt like liquid and I was starving and thirsty. .
As I sat with my head down, waiting to be taken back to the farm I convinced myself that it wasn’t over until they handed my license back and I got in the car. It was then that I looked around, saw all the other distraught faces and forced myself to get up to keep my fellow Death Racers still in the game. .
We all did end up getting another shot at being in the race, but that’s a story for another time. .
I may not have walked away with a skull, but the strengths I learned that I had beat anything I can put on a shelf. .
