It's still March, so put on your red lipstick, ladies (and some of you gents, LOL!) and speak up. Let your voice be heard through this Marie Claire campaign in conjunction with the International Women's Day 2019.
I think every woman in Malaysia needs to know that she is safe ANYTIME, ANYWHERE!
For a country that was once voted as the safest in the Southeast Asian region, I honestly still don't feel safe to go out sometimes. When we want to get more people to walk and use the public transport, I'm still wondering if it's going to be safe for me.
I live in Setapak just a few minutes away from the Uptown Danau Kota. That midnight bazaar opens from 10 pm onwards, but if I'm going there alone, I'd still drive and find the nearest place to park. Why, you ask?
Simple, I usually go out bringing my phone and cash and I'm worried if someone might attack and snatch my purse from me. You think it's funny? I have 25 stitches all over my body to prove that crimes happening in my neighbourhood are no laughing matter.
I don't even dare to run around at night after work for a quick exercise, hence opting to go to the gym instead because of what happened to me some years ago.
Once my mother was tending to her garden and a couple of guys on a motorbike stopped to pretend to ask for directions. They just snatched her necklace and sped off. So, now what? We don't even feel safe in our own compound.
So please don't call us 'typical lady drivers', etc because sometimes we have to drive for safety reasons. We cannot even walk 10 minutes to the nearest shop with our purse without worrying if some crack-heads are willing to murder us over RM50 (and even less in some cases!). I just hope that one day, we can all go out on our own around the neighbourhood without having to worry about our safety.
