Under the Palms and Dreaming
South Carolina is known as the “Palmetto State”. The official State tree is the Sabal Palmetto which also appears on the State Seal and on the State Flag. The Palmetto is rooted in historical significance dating back to the Revolutionary War in 1776. A palmetto-log fort, under Colonel William Moultrie, withstood the barrage of British cannons during the British’s attack on Sullivan’s Island.
Today the Palmetto tress line the streets and beaches in Charleston, Mt. Pleasant, Daniel Island, James Island, Isle of Palms, and Sullivan’s Island.
