Week 1/Day 3 of the @calgarybarbell 16 week strength programme, and also a day of firsts! 3x6 Pin Squats @ 65% - Considering I’ve not done these before, I felt they went quite well. 
Bench was meant to be a 2 board press but I could only find the one in the gym and had an absolute mare of a time trying to get it onto the bar! 🤦🏻‍♂️
Again, this is the first time I’ve used a board for bench press. This was meant to be at RPE 8 for 3x6 but I think i may have been able to at least put an extra couple kg on the bar. 
Finished up with some DB 1 arm rows and birddogs. 
OK BYE! 😄✌🏼

✨✨Client Spotlight✨✨ Meet my client Jasmine👋🏼 Jasmine is one of my newest clients to join the #kirstyreidfitness team and she’s absolutely killing it! 
Jasmine came to me with a goal of wanting to improve her over all well-being, build lean muscle and drop any extra KGs from her pregnancy.

Apart from running, Jas is new to strength training and has no former weight training or movement experience. Here she is performing her first EVER DB over head press!!!!! This is a fantastic exercise for both beginners and the more advanced. For me personally it’s like the gateway exercise for all other pressing exercises, as there are so many ways you can regress and progress it. It’s also a safe position for the shoulder/rotator cuff to be in, reducing risk of injury while where building strength and working on technique. In my opinion one of the best upper body exercises💪🏼 What I’m looking for in a over head press is core engaged, neutral spine, chest up, wrists stacked over elbows and elbows in tight! From there a big inhale and big exhale on the concentric movement of the press. We want to to think about pressing up and back, so our bicep finishes inline with our ear. As you can see Jasmine is killing her first time performing this exercise! Very proud😝

Jas is a natural at exercise and has great form with all movements. She is pleasure to coach and I have loved seeing her progress over the past few weeks. She takes her training seriously and truely gives herself 110% every session! Even being a busy mum of 2, she makes the time, gets it done and looks forward to every session. I couldn’t be more proud of her and excited to see what the next few weeks bring. You got this girl💪🏼 The thing I love about my job the most is helping amazing women like Jasmine feel confident, strong, happy and empowered. Here’s 3 quick tips for anyone out there wanting to improve the shape of their legs:
.
1. Use a high volume approach (lots of sets and reps) 
2. For the best growth use higher reps (10-20) for the Quads + Glutes and Lower reps (5-10) for the Hamstrings 
3. Prioritise Progressive Overload and always strive to complete more work (by increasing the number of sets, reps and weight over time) .
Here’s a free workout which is what I completed today: 
1. DB Walking Lunges 3x10ea 
2a. Vertical Leg Press 4x10
2b. Leg Extensions 4x20 
3. Leg Curls 10,8,5,10,8,5 
4a. Cable Hip Abductions 4x10ea

@jakey_boessler95 also did some pressing today. His back was getting a bit flared up from leaning back (which isn't always problematic) so we worked on bracing his core and cueing "ribs down" in particular.

Lifts from today. 
1️⃣: Swiss Bar OHP @158 for 5. I really wanted that last rep. Like really, really wanted it. Just had to lock it out. Sometimes it just takes the right cues. Thanks @fiftybarbell for driving home the importance of fully locking out the elbows when doing tricep work.

This is one of the most common mistake that I see people make while doing this exercise. Standing too close to the machine will limit your range of motion and you might also use your body weight to push down the bar while lifting heavy.⁣⁣

✅ MOVE BACK 2-3 STEPS⁣⁣

Take a few steps back and create space for bar movement. This will allow you to perform this exercise with full range of motion and you wont be able to use your bodyweight to push down the bar and let your triceps do the work.⁣⁣

This is again a very big mistake that people make. This usually happens when you are trying to lift too heavy, you tend to let your elbow move to create momentum to push down the weight that you otherwise wouldn’t have managed to handle. Or sometimes people are not conscious enough to keep their elbows fixed.⁣⁣

✅ELBOWS LOCKED AT ONE POSITION⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Locking the elbows at one position is important to keep constant tension on the triceps and letting the triceps do all the work not the supporting muscles. Also, this back and forth motion is initiated from the shoulder joint when we let our shoulders move, so keep your shoulders tight and do not let them move.⁣⁣

❌HALF REPS⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Last but not the least half reps will strip off your potential gains. Half repping is a big problem among many trainees either because they do not know the importance of full reps or because they try to lift too heavy wherein full range of motion isnt possible.⁣⁣

✅ ALWAYS PERFORM FULL ROM REPS⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Full range of motion will give you maximum gains possible. Whenever we perform an exercise our aim should be get all possible from that exercise. New overhead press personal best, 65kg (143lbs) strict press (no bending knees for a boost) for 5 reps. 
Strict overhead press is the best exercise for shoulder gains, specifically front deltoids but because it's a heavy compound lift that means it uses multiple joints and muscle groups, triceps, forearms, deltoids, shoulders, glutes, legs even core for stability. If you're not barbell overhead pressing on shoulder day, stop fornicating with arachnids and start doing the OHP.

For those that deal with a feeling of stiffness in an area, whether that be due to joint changes, muscular tension, or altered sensation, some gentle movement is a great place to start to see if it helps.
.
Moving an area around is one of the easiest things we can do to relieve sensations of stiffness. Think about how you feel after sitting around all day versus getting up and taking a walk. Or how you feel after a quick warm up.
.
We can take that same concept and bring it to a smaller scale with some simple range of motion exercises or dynamic stretches.
.
Something like the around the world can be done in training or warm up. It can also be done at home with a broomstick or band. But if you feel stiff at work, you could just as easily do some shoulder circles.
.
The point is to try movement first. However that fits into your daily routine.
.
This is the Around The World. It can be scaled up or down to your personal abilities. Bands are easier because you can pull out against them through the sticky points. PVC is harder due to the fixed position. And adding weights turns this simple ROM exercise into a full blown shoulder strengthener.
. 
So try it out if you feel like you have stiff shoulders. Scale it to your needs and goals, and as always, have some fun.

One of my FAVORITE shoulder lifts. I love love love it. But it took me a while to get down. Here are some things to keep in mind to perform it properly; ⁣
⁣
1️⃣The bar path isn’t vertical: Swipe to see a side view. See how I push my head through with each rep? This is the correct range of motion and will have your shoulders moving properly (ie you’re stronger and safer) ⁣
⁣
2️⃣ Engage your core AND your lats. Your core should stay tight in order to stabilize you, keep you from using momentum, and keep you from arching your back (not good!). Your lats will help stabilize you on the eccentric portion of the lift. ⁣
⁣
3️⃣ Don’t hunch your shoulders!! This will engage your upper traps, and detract from your delts. We want nice delts, ok? ⁣
⁣
4️⃣ This is a compound lift. Do this at the BEGINNING of your shoulder/upper body workout, then move on to lighter/isolation lifts like dumbbell presses, lateral raises, etc. ⁣
⁣
Always remember the standard Olympic bar weighs 45lbs. So, start with an appropriate weight for you and move on from there 😊⁣

Keeping the shoulder theme going, here’s an exercise that helped me a lot with my rehab 🏃‍♀️⁣

Anything bottoms up KB presses I happen to love due to the amount of stability needed around the shoulder joint 👑⁣
⁣
The shoulder and hip are ball and socket joints that have the freedom to move up, down, sideways, and diagonal as opposed to a hinge joint like the elbow or knee that moves back and forth 🦚⁣
⁣
Unlike the hip, the shoulder has a very shallow and flat socket which more closely resembles a plate, making it more like a ball and saucer joint ☕️⁣
⁣
Due to this inherent instability, the shoulder relies on the surrounding musculature to keep it strong and stable 🥊⁣
⁣
Begin by punching up towards the ceiling to engage the serratus anterior. This muscle plays a huge role in stabilizing the shoulder blade 🏆 ⁣

Keep the weight in line with the shoulder and slowly rotate back and forth 🧩⁣

It requires not only a lot of shoulder and upper back strength, but core strength to prevent your spine from bending too much due to relative flexibility.⁣

I’ve been doing them for about a year and a half and I can just barely do my bodyweight. BUT, that’s more motivation to keep working hard and set goals to shoot for!⁣
