Why is #malasana, or yogi squat, so beneficial to practice during pregnancy?
๐ŸŒ€
๐ŸŒ€
When a mama is in malasana during labor and pushing, she widens her pelvic outlet by 30%, offering baby A LOT more room to maneuver into an ideal position to make the journey earthside. This can shorten labors and make them smoother and easier for both mama and baby. ๐ŸŒ€
๐ŸŒ€
Practicing malasana during pregnancy helps tone and strengthen the pelvic floor muscles, helps align the pelvic girdle and can help improve the function of the elimination organs. It can soothe pinchy nerves in the back and reduce low back aches. It also strengthens the core and the legs to support muscular endurance. ๐ŸŒ€
๐ŸŒ€
It is a very grounding, sensual, yet powerful pose, balancing the root and sacral chakra.
๐ŸŒ€
๐ŸŒ€
If you want to push in this position, you reduce your likelihood of tearing, but thatโ€™s really only the case if you have practiced squatting during pregnancy and have stretched and toned the muscles and tissues prior to labor. ๐ŸŒ€
๐ŸŒ€
Placing a block or stack of books under the sitz bones can take some of the strain off of the joints and muscles as you get accustomed to this pose.
If your heels donโ€™t want to reach the floor, fold up a blanket and place it under the heels. Keep the spine long, shoulders away from the ears, and donโ€™t let that crown slip off your head! ๐ŸŒ€

I've been MIA from this page for a bit! This gorgeous baby boy came earthside on July 18th at 0844 in our home surrounded by love. .
.
.
I'm honoring this postpartum period and 4th trimester. The word I'm using to describe it is "slow." When Aurora was born, it was 0 to 60. I'm very blessed this time to be able to take my time to heal, bond, and navigate being a family of 4.
.
.
.
There is so much pressure to "bounce back". I'm just here learning to not only accept but LOVE this new body that does incredible things. I'm being very particular about the energy I'm allowing in during this sacred and fragile time. .

Now enrolling!!!
๐ŸŒ€
๐ŸŒ€
Iโ€™ve teamed up with BEST Birth Hawaii to offer the 9-week Mindfulness for Childbirth and Parenting course!! ๐ŸŒ€
๐ŸŒ€
Enrolling now for classes starting Sept 7th. Ideal for November & December due dates!
๐ŸŒ€
๐ŸŒ€
Why Mindfulness for Childbirth?
It covers all the traditional childbirth education topics, but you also learn a practical life skill that will help you not only in childbirth, but also as a parent. You can get your yoga and relaxation in addition to your childbirth education! ๐ŸŒ€
๐ŸŒ€
Research in mindfulness for pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum show that participants experience significantly less anxiety, fears, depression, and mood swings. Babies and their parents get a happier, more well-adjusted start to life together. ๐ŸŒ€
๐ŸŒ€
Check out the article linked in my bio from Pregnancy & the Newborn magazine on what to expect in the Mindfulness for Childbirth course.
๐ŸŒ€
๐ŸŒ€
Whatโ€™s the difference between Hypnobirthing and Mindfulness? Nancy Bardacke, the midwife, founder and author of the Mindful Birthing movement, has said โ€œwhen your toddler is throwing a fit in the grocery store because he wants a candy bar, you need mindfulness in that moment, not hypnosis.โ€ Mindfulness teaches you the skills to be fully present, non-judgmentally and non-reactively, to your experience. ๐ŸŒ€
๐ŸŒ€
Space is limited, email info@bestbirthhawaii to claim yours!! If youโ€™re not on Oahu but you know this is the right course for you, go to the link in my bio to enroll in the virtual option! We get to have class togetherโ€”in real time, not pre-recordedโ€”wherever you are in the world!

...just like giving birth. โ€”Nancy Bardacke, Mindful Birthing
๐ŸŒ€
๐ŸŒ€
Everyone does it.
We do it every moment of every day. ๐ŸŒ€
๐ŸŒ€
And yet each breath, in each new moment, is completely unique. Just as each baby is completely unique. And each contraction is a new and different contraction. ๐ŸŒ€
๐ŸŒ€
Once this breath passes through your body, you will never have the same breath again. ๐ŸŒ€
๐ŸŒ€
Itโ€™s the first thing we do when we come into this world, and the last thing we do when we leave this world, and the breath will be there with us, by our side, for every high and low in between. ๐ŸŒ€
๐ŸŒ€
Donโ€™t underestimate its power as your constant companion in this life. Donโ€™t underestimate its ability to be there for you through the toughest moments of your labor and birth. The breath always follows through for you. ๐ŸŒ€

Yesterday I had a new student in my prenatal yoga class who just started her 2nd trimester and this is her 3rd baby. ๐ŸŒ€
๐ŸŒ€
She came up to me after class and told me how much she loves prenatal yoga and how much it helped with her 2nd pregnancy and delivery. She told me the story of the birth of her first, a long, difficult, and extremely intense experience that lasted over 30 hours with 3 hours of pushing. ๐Ÿ˜ซ๐Ÿ˜ณ
๐ŸŒ€
๐ŸŒ€
During her 2nd pregnancy she resolved to be there more for her body and create good habits in pregnancy to โ€˜trainโ€™ her body, mind, and spirit for the โ€˜marathonโ€™ of labor. Her 2nd labor was 4 hours long, and she pushed for 20min!! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ๐Ÿค—
๐ŸŒ€
๐ŸŒ€
I love hearing stories like this!! While prenatal yoga doesnโ€™t guarantee these kinds of results or outcomes, what I love most about this story was the Momโ€™s resolve to create a loving supportive habit for herself by doing prenatal yoga and that love and devotion paid off. Big victory for that mama, and itโ€™s awesome to have class participants that have experienced first-hand the kinds of benefits a regular practice can bring to pregnancy and childbirth!

This is such a great reminder. ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿผ
We often think of โ€œgoing into laborโ€ as a time when we have to โ€œdoโ€ something. Which is understandable because in this life, we are regularly told that we are only worthy if we are accomplishing, achieving, working, bettering, trying, striving. ๐ŸŒ€
๐ŸŒ€
Thank goodness we donโ€™t have to wake up every morning and say to ourselves โ€œToday I need to grow the babyโ€™s intestines.โ€ How stressful would that be?!?! I love it when we talk about this during the Mindfulness for Childbirth class because there are always a lot of realizations, a-ha moments, and self-compassions that arrive for the participants. Itโ€™s one of those pivotal moments when parents begin to look at this whole process a bit differently. ๐ŸŒ€
๐ŸŒ€
The primary โ€œworkโ€ of giving birth is just allowing. As Nancy Bardacke says in the book Mindful Birthing, โ€œYour work is to drop into mindful presence and just be with the sensations and any thoughts and emotions that arise.โ€
(The quote in the pic is also from the book Mindful Birthing) ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿผ
๐ŸŒ€
๐ŸŒ€
What does that mean, how do you drop into mindful presence, and why is that a good thing for birth for both mama and baby? Click the link in my bio to arrange a free phone call with me where we can talk about just that. Or anything else you might want to...

Whatโ€™s your favorite app in the parenting realm?? Mine is โ€œWhite Noise.โ€ I use this app for me, my children and when Iโ€™m working postpartum shifts, I use this for the babies too (as long as parents are on board). It sounds similar to the womb, itโ€™s comforting. Show me your favorite parenting apps! #oahudoula #postpartumdoula #hawaiidoula

What does this remind you of?
๐ŸŒ€
๐ŸŒ€
I was out hiking with my good friend the other day and when I looked up, my breath caught. As a #birthworker , I see #placenta all the way. ๐ŸŒ€
๐ŸŒ€
What do you know about the placenta? How do you feel about it?
I recently read a great article that was shared with me by another dear friend, and one of my first doula clients. ๐ŸŒ€
๐ŸŒ€
I love that the writer discusses some of my favorite things about the placenta, including how remarkable it is that our body grows an entirely extra ORGAN to sustain and nourish our baby. As well as its masterful filtering abilities, allowing good immunities to reach baby while eliminating harmful pathogens. She even goes on to discuss how researching the genius of the placenta could lead to medical breakthroughs for those needing organ transplants to survive. And did you know...the placenta does not belong to the mother...it is the babyโ€™s, with 50% of its genetic material belonging to the father. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ๐Ÿ˜ฎ๐Ÿคฏ
๐ŸŒ€
๐ŸŒ€
When I was pregnant and delivered my daughter, I never thought about the placenta (except when it prevented me from having sex because the doctors said I had placenta previa ๐Ÿ™„). When I gave birth, I never asked to see it, I didnโ€™t keep it, and I have no idea what the hospital did with it...all things I regret now. I grew an entirely new organ!! It did an amazing job keeping my daughter alive in utero for 41+ weeks!! I wish I had at least looked at it, admired it, and offered it my gratitude before it became medical waste. ๐ŸŒ€
๐ŸŒ€
As a #doula, I now look at and admire every placenta birthed by the mamas. It looks like a tree, the umbilical cord as the trunk and the branches as the numerous veins snaking through this gorgeous organ. ๐ŸŒ€
๐ŸŒ€
Mindfulness practice gives us generous opportunities to look at something with fresh eyes, take notice, see more deeply, and appreciate what we may have previously labeled โ€˜grossโ€™ or โ€˜insignificantโ€™. #lifeisamazing
๐ŸŒ€
๐ŸŒ€
Iโ€™ve posted the full article about the placenta for your enjoyment, you can find it by clicking the link in my bio ๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’— Let me know your thoughts!!

I had no clue this was the number of stall I had parked in yesterday when I arrived at another birth. When I saw the spot I said โ€œOOH LOOK THAT IS MY SPOT,โ€ parked and headed in. I was there some time and when I returned to my car I noticed the stall number. HOLY DIVINE ALIGNING just when I needed it the most. Yesterdayโ€™s birth was the FOURTH birth in a weeks time! This is a first for me and also a fear factor of mine: what if I have more clients in a months time, is it possible?? Well I believe source energy (my ancestors) is telling me that anything and everything is possible and Iโ€™m on the right track. I always trust the ancestors, I especially trust that they will help keep my mamas and families safe. Feeling grateful and thankful and everything in between. So honored to have supported these families. #ilovewhatidoula #doulalove #oahudoula #hawaiidoula #doulalife #doulalyfe #divinealignment #angelnumber444 #mahalokeakua

Go ahead, read that again. ๐ŸŒ€

If you were to offer acceptance and kindness to your pain, would that change your relationship to it? Would that change how you feel about it? Would that change how your body reacts to it? ๐ŸŒ€
๐ŸŒ€
With mindfulness practice, we learn the skill of noticing our habitual thoughts and reactions to something, like the experience of pain, and then perhaps shifting our perspective so that we are better able to work WITH our body rather than fighting against it or making it the enemy. ๐ŸŒ€
๐ŸŒ€
โ€œPregnant with her first baby, Sarah was having lots of back pain. One night in class she said...โ€™The other night I got up to pee, and I just started worrying about everything. I worried that my labor pain would be worse because of my back pain. I worried that I would have to use drugs during labor because of the back pain. I worried that my back pain wouldnโ€™t go away after the birth and then my mom would have to come live with us because I wouldnโ€™t be able to take care of the baby. I worried that I would have to take pain medication for my back pain after the birth and I wouldnโ€™t be able to breast-feed. All these fantasies about the future. And then I remembered my breath and I started my mindfulness practiceโ€™. Sarah began to pay more attention to her moment-to-moment experiences in everyday life, and she found that there were times during the day when her back pain was quite tolerable and that there were even stretches when she didnโ€™t have any pain at all. By using her back pain as an opportunity for mindfulness practice, Sarah found a way to offer acceptance and kindness to her pain.โ€
๐ŸŒ€
๐ŸŒ€
Often we canโ€™t change the way things are, but by changing our relationship to those events, we open up to opportunities and outcomes that we would otherwise have been closed off to.

What are you a warrior for in your life?
๐ŸŒ€
๐ŸŒ€
Warrior 2, or Virabhadrasana 2, is an incredible pose during prenatal yoga. The pose both stretches and strengthens the arms and the legs. It brings opening and stretch through the inner thighs and hips. It requires balance and focus. Flexibility, strength, balance, and focus. All qualities that women draw upon when they are giving birth. What we practice on the mat we carry into life. ๐ŸŒ€
๐ŸŒ€
No matter who you are, or how experienced you are at yoga, this pose is accessible to everyone and so wonderfully empowering. Have someone snap a photo of you practicing and use yourself as inspiration whenever self-doubts creep in. Or better yet, practice in front of a mirror, and as your gaze extends beyond the fingers, gaze into the eyes of that powerful woman holding steady and strong, breathing deeply in the pose. ๐ŸŒ€

What is mindfulness?? Hereโ€™s your answer ๐Ÿ‘†
๐ŸŒ€
๐ŸŒ€
These words sound simple, but when they are really broken down and examined, they become immensely powerful. ๐ŸŒ€
๐ŸŒ€
I think the awareness piece is my favorite. If I could explain to you the incredible reverence, gratitude, and awe that comes with that awareness...๐Ÿคฏ
๐ŸŒ€
๐ŸŒ€
And I never truly knew what grace was until I began to grasp and exercise this non-judgmental thing. When we begin to examine how many judgments we hold not only against ourselves and others, but events and perceptions in our lives, itโ€™s baffling. ๐ŸŒ€
๐ŸŒ€
And yet the point is not to become a non-judgmental human, because that is impossible. Itโ€™s to recognize where we are being judgmental, how thatโ€™s affecting us, and to be open to seeing something differently. We are being non-judgmental about the experience we are having as a way to show ourselves and others compassion. ๐Ÿ’—
๐ŸŒ€
๐ŸŒ€
And then when we begin to apply all this to the realm of pregnancy, childbirth and parenting...๐ŸŽ‡๐ŸŽ†๐ŸŒ
๐ŸŒ€

โ€œAlthough mindfulness is a universal capacity of the human mind, unless we intentionally choose to cultivate it, we can spend much of our lives on automatic pilot, sleepwalking through life rather than being fully present for it. Taking the time to learn mindfulness through meditation practice now can help you more skillfully manage the inevitable stresses of pregnancy and the irreducible element of uncertainty of the birthing process. More than that, mindfulness meditation can help you manage the intense sensations of childbirth we usually call pain, increasing your confidence and decreasing the fears that so often accompany this profound journey into the unknown. And mindfulness can help you cultivate lifelong inner skills for healthy living, wise parenting, and loving partnershipโ€

I think one of the things that draws me to teaching expectant parents the skill of mindfulness is that I know itโ€™s not just preparing them for labor. Itโ€™s preparing them for those moments when the baby is up at 3am and wonโ€™t go back to sleep. Itโ€™s preparing them for the frustrations when breastfeeding isnโ€™t going so smoothly. Itโ€™s preparing them for the irritability and fussiness babies go through when they are teething. Itโ€™s preparing them for the toddler meltdowns in the grocery store. ๐ŸŒ€
๐ŸŒ€
All the research in mindfulness for childbirth and parenting shows that parents who cultivate this skill and continue with it have less postpartum depression and anxiety, have happier babies, and both parents and children exhibit more resilience to lifeโ€™s challenges. ๐ŸŒ€
๐ŸŒ€
But what really motivates me in teaching this skill to parents is that I know their daily practice of mindfulness sets the example for their children, those children are the beneficiaries of happier, more satisfied, less stressed out parents, and then those children grow up to be more content, well-adjusted, successful adults. The things we do now, for ourselves and our kids, affects the future generations and creates ripples of goodness that are immeasurable. ๐ŸŒ€
