💥100 Calorie Snacks💥⠀

I think I'm safe in saying that snacking is my biggest downfall when cutting down on body fat. I plan and prep all my meals, then at some point I'll get a notion and want a lil sumthin sumthin. Next thing you know I'm 3 boxes deep in Jaffa Cakes.⠀

So, how can we snack without having to put the daily macros in jeopardy? Quite easily really. Maybe it's just me - but when I think "snack" I think "biscuits", but I think there are a few of us in that boat. But if you can step away from that mindset there are a tonne of snacks you can have for 100 calories or less - delicious and won't throw you off track? Yes please!⠀

Now you may look at these and think they aren't snacks, or aren't 100 calories. But here's the secret - you have to understand portion control and moderation. The popcorn is air-popped, not a large cinema popcorn with salt and two spurts of butter. It's not a full tub of cottage cheese or 4 spoons of peanut buttah.⠀

Don't get me wrong - these are tasty low calorie options to have between meals - but that's what snacks are supposed to be. If you're eating breakfast, lunch and dinner with the equivalent of another dinner spaced in between all 3 - you're going to struggle to stay in a deficit. Ideally your meals will be high volume and nutritious enough to help keep the snacking at a minimum! ⠀

I eat less in the beginning of the day as my wife and I will *usually* plan our meal around something our 2 young boys (ages 3 and 5) will eat. It’s easier to not have to cook 2 totally separate meals. I eat whatever we’re having and pay attention to when I’m *satisfied not stuffed* and that serves me well.

We do feed our children mostly healthy food, but guess what? They eat hot dogs and mac and cheese too. #theyllbefine

💥SLEEP LIKE A BABY💥

Sleep, it’s something we do every single day. Yet, most of don’t know to properly do it. Why? Because nobody ever taught you how to do it..

To get the most out of your 7-8-9 hours (that’s how much you should be getting) you want to be setting yourself up for a solid night’s of sleep, during the day. Sounds weird right? But it’s true!
-
No caffeine after 3-4 PM, you don’t want to have caffeine in your system when you go to sleep. That’ll impair sleep quality. Just as having a lot of food to digest. Don’t eat a big meal 2-3 hours before bed.

Don’t drink late either, this might wake you up because you have to pee. And TRY to not have to train late at night. Training late at night will impair sleep quality.

Plan your next day so you know exactly what you’ll be doing and you don’t hit your bed thinking about a gazillion things. This one is HUGE.

Keep your room cold. This will help you. You’ll thank me later. Block out screens (or use f.lux) to block out blue light, this will mess with your biological clock. Blacking out your room will massively help you.

And lastly, studies have shown that human beings have the best sleep between 10pm and 2pm. So, get your sleep during money time. 10pm to 5-6 am.

If you can use all of these guidelines, and set your life up in such a way that you can hit all of these marks, you’ll sleep quality will MASSIVELY improve, which will improve your energy, which will improve your life and this will turn into a vicious cycle of success.

And TRY to not have to train late at night. Training late at night will impair sleep quality. - Plan your next day so you know exactly what you’ll be doing and you don’t hit your bed thinking about a gazillion things. This one is HUGE. - Keep your room cold. This will help you. You’ll thank me later. Block out screens (or use f.lux) to block out blue light, this will mess with your biological clock. Blacking out your room will massively help you. - And lastly, studies have shown that human beings have the best sleep between 10pm and 2pm. Roast cauliflower and chickpea bowl. Recipe for a super easy 3 day meal prep. I like to do three days so the greens stay fresh. Roast red onion and cauliflower (I used a purple one from the farmers market), a big handful of leafy greens, chickpeas and a yoghurt and tahini dressing. It’s Healthy Schools week and the kids are in their PE kits all week!

We need more of this is our schools...with the sedentary lifestyles and poor nutritional choices that are made day in day out - we need to teach kids about making healthy choices and living a balanced life!

Do my kids get treats? Of course...more than I’d like some times!
.
Do I take them for fast food or give them fizzy drinks and sweets? NOPE! But then I don’t have those things either and so if I won’t put it in my body, I sure as hell won’t put it in my kids’ bodies!
.
Yesterday A said to me, “other kids’ parents don’t workout like you and know about healthy food” and I have to say, it felt good to hear her say that to me in a positive way! She knows (as does Z) that they aren’t deprived because I won’t take them to McDonalds...they understand that I want to look after their growing bodies...
.
Does the occasional Haribo slip through...um, yes...school kids birthdays 🙄. Do they eat ice cream, cake, cookies, pizza, ham...yes occasionally they do...of course...but it’s not daily, not even weekly and it sure isn’t a given!
.
Say what you will, but I believe that true knowledge about health, fitness and nutrition starts from when they are kids...if they understand it, they will choose when to enjoy the treats and they will know HOW to look after their overall health!

🥦Vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian, flexitarian, carnivore - there are many words to describe the way people eat. Above that, we also have all the fad diets. ⠀

👩‍⚕️Day after day I read news articles etc that focus on people that labeling their diets. I have some serious issues with this. In my opinion, a healthy, well-balanced diet is individualized to your personal needs. You can and should be eating your own individualized diet based on what your body needs, your food preferences, and what makes you feel good. You should be empowered to make your own choices about health and nutrition. ⠀

🤔If you were to label my diet, it’ s a mix of various ones. Most of my meals are rich in fruits, veggies, grains, beans and legumes, olive oil and nuts like a vegan diet. Sometimes a like a piece of quality and local produced fish - then suddenly my diet is like the Mediterranean diet. I love eating raw foods like fruits and salads. If someone made a cake and it’s real butter and eggs in it, I would eat it. I also love chips, chocolate and ice cream during weekends - suddenly I'm an unhealthy eater. ⠀

Summary:⠀
- There’s no perfect diet for everyone ⠀
- You can absolutely get all the nutrients you need without eating meat⠀
- Meat can be a part of a well-balanced diet ⠀
- There are more important things to focus on than labeling the way you eat ⠀

Simply, yes. 'WHY ARE YOU TELLING ME TO GO VEGETARIAN OR VEGAN WHEN I DON'T WANT TO! YOU'RE THE WORST NUTRITIONIST EVER'

Slow down. 
Whilst the second part of that statement is a popular opinion, the first part is not correct. 
Plant-based does not mean without animal products, or even without consuming animals full stop.

Not that there is an issue with that, it's just not what I'm saying.

Your diet SHOULD be plant-based. There are 100s of  benefits of eating a predominantly plant-based diet. These include avoiding vitamin deficiencies, increasing fibre intake, more antioxidants etc.

Animal products can still play a big role in this, and also provide plenty of important micronutrients/amino acids

But increasing the plant-based content ofthe diet should be a number one priority for the overwhelming majority of people, regardless of their goal.

Aiming for 30 different plant sources per week is a great place to start- include fruit and veg, herbs and spices, nuts, seeds, legumes, grains and oats

But— but don’t carbs make you fat? Absolutely not, I’ll explain this later in the post. But firstly, we tend to want to eat protein to make sure we don’t lose muscle right? True, losing precious muscle is the last thing we want. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

But what if I told you that carbohydrates protect your muscles more than proteins? Think about it this way— why would your body want to use the protein from your muscles? We lose muscle when we either don’t have enough protein or calories in our diet. Seeing as we’re not training while travelling, our protein intake isn’t increased so it is unlikely our protein intakes are inadequate. The diet-related muscle losses is likely going to come from needing the calories. This is where carbs come in. Carbohydrates are like the zinc spray they use on boats, which gets corroded first before the actual boat metal starts to rust. As carbs are the preferred fuel source of the body, it means that it will get sacrificed first before your body turns to your muscles.⁣

Secondly, your body has a large capacity for carbohydrate storage. There is literally a 500g buffer for carbohydrate before it gets converted to body fat. If you stick to healthy sources of carbohydrates such as fruits, starchy vegetables like potatoes, rice, pasta and bread (yes I said pasta and bread), you’re likely to get full before it gets converted to fat. By eating these whole food sources of carbohydrates, your appetite is likely to take control and restrict how many calories you actually eat. ⁣⁣⁣⁣

If you’re in a tropical country, take advantage of the amazing fruits. It’s an even healthier way of staying lean with all the vitamins, minerals and fibres there are. ⁣⁣

Whenever someone wants to lose weight, two variables (aside form sleep) play a key role; diet and working out. For whatever reason, everyone's first assumption is that training is the hard part. Getting to the gym, lifting with compound movements and overloading the body progressively over time. Maybe it isn't everyone's first choice of something to do after work, but that isn't the hard part. In fact, going to the gym and lifting is quite easy in nature. What is hard is eating healthy consistently. Focusing on whole foods, not stuffing yourself and eating based on your activity, that is difficult especially doing it consistently over time. Difficult doesn't mean impossible though. Far from. Eating healthy involves making decisions and choices at first that may not be your first choices nor the choices you want and it involves self control. People always say that your abs are made in the kitchen and I believe that whole heartedly. You can work out has hard and long as you want, but if your diet isn't in check and you're not eating well consistently and your enot developing lifestyle habits, you'll never achieve the results you want. Training is easy, but diet is where the effort has to be.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
