When I first got this LP a couple of weeks ago, I refrained from putting up a review of my own thoughts on it because I was simply blown away; a more solid collection of thematic psychedelic tunes you’re hard-pressed to find.
This is the first incarnation of Trapeze, featuring Terry Rowley and John Jones, the latter of whom co-wrote a lot of the songs here, despite being somewhat superfluous as a “lead” singer; John Lodge of the Moodies who produced the record (and pretty much everyone except Jones I’m sure) knew Glenn Hughes’ voice was the stronger of the two, subsequently singing in every song here. Jones said fuck that and left, Rowley following a bit later, despite his “Send Me No More Letters” being released as the first single (it’s no wonder why they are on Threshold when you hear the song). The three remaining members saw which way the wind was blowing, and decided to rock balls-out for their next record as a power trio, a path all the members would continue with their various other projects, including Deep Purple and Whitesnake. This album can therefore be viewed as pretty much a document of the band as they’d never be again, and a damn fine one it is.
Lodge’s production along with the engineers is top-notch, sounding better than many others in the sea of psych during this period. The sequencing is on point, starting with the very Moodies “It’s Only a Dream” going into the absolutely epic “The Giant’s Dead Hoorah,” arguably the album and the band’s finest hour. The balancing act of pastoral folk themes and organ-driven rock n’ roll is evidenced by songs like “Am I” going into the burner that is “Suicide,” harmonizing the line “She knew there’s only one way” before diving into what is neither condoning nor condemning the act of offing oneself, merely reporting the act. It’s fucking brilliant.
I wouldn’t recommend this record, I’d say get it right now. The fact I had to wait 34 years to hear it is frustrating.
