This is Egusi Ijebu, (Melon seed soup) from Ijebuland in Ogun state. This soup unlike the popular Egusi soup is cooked without vegetables, it’s just fluid and almost watery. .
This soup is prepared with other ingredients asides from the melon seeds such as Ogiri (a paste of fermented oil seeds) , this particular paste gives the Egusi Ijebu it’s distinct taste. .
Egusi Ijebu can be cooked with different protein , however from experience, I can testify that the best protein with Egusi Ijebu is smoked fish or goat meat head and leg. Just imagine sucking the Egusi Ijebu soup from the goat meat head’s bone. It’s taste so yummy. .
Egusi Ijebu can be paired with different food like any type of swallow,( Eba and Fufu are my favorite ),rice, and even bread (soft Agege bread)
Though this soup is loved by Ijebu people but then other tribes who have had it love it too. Egusi Ijebu is part of our menu and it’s available to order in different sizes of bowl.
Don’t be a regular pepper stew eater, try Egusi Ijebu. Trust me , it’s one to love.
