TOTAL HEALTH TUESDAY. Warning, long but VERY important and well worth-it read! Nearly everyone is aware of the detrimental effects of smoking, but did you know that eating excess protein, specifically animal protein, may prove to be just as detrimental to your health as the horrible habit of the 90’s, smoking?
Protein is an anabolic macronutrient, meaning it is essential for tissue repair and growth. However, depending on the amount, quality, and type, it can be one of the most harmful things we consume as humans.
A study done at University of California, Davis looked at high protein (20% or more of diet), moderate protein (10 to 19% of diet), and low protein (less than 10% of diet). People who ate high protein diet’s were 74% more likely to die before the end of the study
They also studied types of high protein diets by comparing people who ate meat as their primary protein source and those who’s ate vegetable based protein. The participants who consumed meat as their source were four times more likely to die from cancer and heart disease than the high protein vegetarian diets. These statistics were similar to the study done in looking at your chances of dying from cancer if you were a smoker versus non-smoker... CRAZY to think about.
Take aways!!! Not all calories are treated equal. The amount of protein you need depends on your body type, activity level, and goals. The higher your meat consumption, the higher your chances are of developing cancer and cardio vascular disease.
Be sure to get clean, organic, grass fed, wild, etc. meats when you do choose to enjoy them and moderation is the simple answer. Bio individualization should never be shoved aside as everyone is different, but on average people should be eating anywhere from .4-.6 grams of protein per pound of body weight. We will have more info about meat, macros, and SO much more coming up :) Happy Tuesday everyone! - 26 minutes ago
