"Most people, it seems to me at least, hate poor people more than they hate poverty." Natives by Akala (2018)
It's a crying shame that after thousands of years of civilisation we still haven't found a cure for the oldest of moral dilemmas: poverty.
For all our achievements, our scientific development, our reasoning skills, the advent of democracy... For all our progress we still haven't figured out collectively how to live well without exploiting others. We've developed one of the most inclusive political systems in history, the liberal democracy, but built into its very foundation are the legacies of capitalism.
Capitalism created imperialism, imperialism created the slave trade, the slave trade needed racism, racism continues to justify inequality, and inequality is the backbone of the political system.
I know that I offended a lot of people with my Notre Dame post, but many of those who were offended seem to have missed the point. So let me clear up a few things.
1. The point is not that we should tell the rich what to do with their money, the point is that the rich rarely give more than the bare minimum back to the people -- and even that, they dodge via tax havens and deductibles, such as, oh wait, donating to rebuild Notre Dame.
2. The point is not that we have to choose EITHER historical monuments OR people, the point is that there's more than enough money for both.
3. The point is not that there are PLENTY of other worthy causes worth donating to, the point is that the money was raised so quickly, so urgently, and so immediately. Such a rapid response to other crises could genuinely reduce death tolls and human suffering, whereas funding building repairs (however necessary and worthy they may be) does not have the same within-hours urgency.
Thank you everyone who has donated to Grenfell or shared the link since seeing my post, you have genuinely given me purpose in these last few days and I will be forever grateful.
