[Behind the Brand] Naver
Naver is Korea’s top internet portal operator, and its presence is ubiquitous, no doubt. It is one of the country’s most popular search engines, and can be considered the Google of Korea.
The origin of the name Naver is actually quite simple. Combining the words “navigate” and “~er” meaning a person, it’s essentially a shortened version of the word “navigator.” Apparently, the name symbolizes the company as a “person” who can help individuals navigate around the sea of information.
According to StatCounter, as of March 2019, Naver holds 13.46 percent of the search engine market share in the country, behind Google that holds 81.05 percent.
