I have forgotten where I tracked down some of the stuff for this car but one of the more interesting things was the stereo head unit.
Let's be clear, the stereo sounds pretty horrendous as I skimped on the small speakers but it was all about finding a head unit that would fit the theme of the retro look. This one was perfect because it filled the double din space in the centre console and looked perfect with the aluminum style accents.
The digital display was also retro. Mcintosh is actually an audiophile standard brand in the world of home stereo, but for some strange reason they did a run of double din tuner/tape and CD head units for the Japanese domestic market of Subaru Legacys as a high end option from around 1998 which I'm guessing was more marketing and visually appealing than genuinely audiophile (like they sold their souls for some dollars). I found a unit for sale second hand pretty dirt cheap from a scrap yard and with a knowledgeable radio specialist we managed to get it to work and to even tune into Australian radio stations. A video by someone else shows the head unit in operation https://youtu.be/5aPZ_Pkhpv8
Another of my favourite pieces was the aircon panel. Again the manufacturer has sadly gone out of business but it was so retro and neat. Wish the NA MX5 had a massive resurgence by the older crowd rather than all the young stance guys so more classic retro stuff would be made for this car. I just love buying bits and pieces for it. Either way I'm pretty sure this is a one of a kind MX5 in Australia and there won't be another with the interior bits as they were bloody hard to get hold of back in the day (all from Japan with Japanese speaking sellers which wasn't the easiest). Note how every piece of wood doesn't match on this car nor does the tan bits which have all started to sadly fade at different rates.... If only Mazda offered their full restoration bits freely and cheaply... #mazdamiata #miataclub #mazdamx5 #mx5miata #mx5club #miatana #mx5na #brgmx5 #britishracinggreen #makegreengreatagain - 1 day ago
