If you really know me, you know I’m very competitive. 
On Tuesday morning I was doing the stepmaster and the girl next to me (college girl) did the stepmaster for 20 min without holding on. 
This morning I had 60 min which I did the first 40 min at level 10 without holding on (thank you college girl) for pushing myself and the last 20 minutes intervals. .

Running and motherhood, what can I say?  Running is my solace, my time for some alone time and peace and quiet where I don’t have someone hanging onto my leg shouting ‘Mummy, mummy, mummy’. Don’t get me wrong, I love my kids more than I could ever have imagined but they do drive me a little 🤪🤯😤 at times!  Last night I had about 2 hours sleep because my eldest was unwell and today I should have smashed out a 6 mile fartlek session according to the plan.  It. Hasn’t.  Happened.  Do I feel guilty? Yes.  Do I feel like I’ve failed marathon training? Yes. Am I so fatigued that I’ve just had a little cry while trying to put on my running kit? Yes.  So I’m listening to my body yelling at me not to run today even though the guilt is immense.  The fartlek will happen on Saturday morning now instead of Saturday’s planned rest.  Sometimes you just have to roll with it and I don’t want to end up injured through pushing myself through the fatigue.  Luckily this week is a ‘cutback’ week in the training so the long run on Sunday won’t be so long so not resting Saturday won’t be such an issue. So now I’m off to get on top of the house and get an early night.  Here’s hoping for a better night’s sleep. 🤞🏻 .

So, I’m starting to get really nervous about Javelina, not because I don’t think I’ll be prepared, but I because am terrified of not pacing myself correctly (and blowing up) in the heat!!!🌵🐍🌞☠️ Though Javelina is touted as a “very runnable, fast course”, it also has a DNF rate of approx 50%. That’s quite high for a “very runnable and fast course.”

I have been reading blogs of people that have done this race in the past and listening to podcasts on pacing. One of the points that really stuck out for me is:

🔆I really need to focus on maximizing my slowest possible pace.🔆

Basically, this means that because it’s a 100k, there will inevitably be a point where I slow down. Therefore, the key is to be strategic in the beginning of the race in keeping my HR in check and avoiding any HR/Lactate Threshold Spikes via walking any significant inclines and possibly throwing a walk/run interval in there to keep the HR low low low. There is no such thing as banking time in an ultra (or a marathon as far as I’m concerned lol). Whatever you do that consumes your energy in the beginning is going to tear you apart the second half and cost you triple the time. If I can remain even and conservative through 2/3rds of the race, I will be able to keep my slowest pace much faster than I otherwise would have.

My coach has also told me that I shouldn’t get anywhere close to my lactate threshold until about mile 40, even then omg lol.  I might shoot for like mile 50.

Some challenges in keeping a low HR is going to be the normal cardiac drift and the HEAT. Staying hydrated enough as dehydration raises HR. -
I have been told NEVER to drink ice water as when it hits your stomach, it actually draws a ton of energy from your body to try and regulate your core internal body temperature! It’s better to drink room temperature water and cool off by using cold water on your skin.

98% humidity for 3 days in a row means...well, a lot of sweat. Fortunately each day has been a little cooler than the last. Tuesday, the heat index topped out at 111° with the humidity. .

First track/speed workout in 4 weeks. We kept my 90 second interval paces at a medium intensity level while I’m working to get my iron levels up after finding out my ferritin was low. .

2 mile warm up
12x90 sec @ 6:50s-7:30s
2:00 recovery
2 mile cool down

Today’s National Rainbow Baby Day 🌈 This isn’t something I would ever wish upon anyone, but it so happened to be the case for us exactly a year ago. This little guy is our miracle baby after that loss, and he made us a family of 4. I’ll never understand why it happened, but just know if you’ve ever experienced this, you are unfortunately not alone. ❤️

My buddy texted me early this morning to say that she wouldn’t be able to run, and running our route in the early morning darkness didn’t seem like a safe idea, so- since I was already dressed- I went ahead and got in a couple of miles with Phil the ‘mill.  After getting the kiddos off to school, I was able to finish my workout and get in my Hill Repeats. We scooted out the door this morning in time to get a few laps around the track while football finished their morning practice. I’m loving that the girls will join me for a lap or 2 and then go sit in the bleachers! 🙌🏻
