Flowering Friday this week is Rhopalostylis sapida. Known in Māori as the nīkau, Rhopalostylis sapida is the only palm native to New Zealand, and is a favourite food of the New Zealand pigeon, kererū.
Rhopalostylis sapida can reach a height of 15 metres, and has a stout green trunk and large fronds that can grow up to three meters in length. It features striking, coral-like inflorescence that appears at the top of its trunk, which can vary in colour from pink to lilac.
You can find Rhopalostylis sapida flowering in the Podocarpus Bed in the New Zealand Collection at Melbourne Gardens. - 0 seconds
