Yesterday marked the festival of Saga Dawa, a Buddhist festival celebrated by the Sikkimese people in Gangtok. It is observed on the full moon day of June and is recognised as the anniversary of Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and death. During the festival a parade, led by the Mahayana monks from the Tsuk La Khang Monastery, goes all around the city. Monks carry idols of Buddha and chant hymns during the procession. Devotees also gather in monasteries and light butter candles in remembrance of the #Buddha . A significant part of the festival is to help those in need and to abstain from eating meat.
